"Bold Luminary, Yggdrasil's chosen, long have I waited to greet you.
We of Arboria swear to protect you. While we live none shall defeat you.
"

Serena (セーニャ, Sēnya) is a character from Dragon Quest XI. She is a dependable healer, capable of using recovery and protective magic, as well as using her lyre in battle for various effects. Both her and her twin sister Veronica come from the land of Arboria and have sworn to protect and aid the Luminary on his journey.

Appearance and Personality[edit]

Serena is a young woman with indigo eyes and long blonde hair that reaches past her shoulders pulled back with a green hairband. She wears a green kirtle over a cream-colored long-sleeved dress with puffy shoulders, an orange skirt with a silver buckle around her waist, and purple shoes worn with orange socks. She also wears a pair of blue earrings and blue pearls around her neck.

Serena is a kind, friendly beauty with a neat and tidy disposition. Although she is calm, laid-back, and compassionate, Serena is also slightly hapless and causes worry for her twin sister. Veronica states that Serena is the younger twin, but due to her transformation, Serena appears to be the older sister. Her harp is her most prized possession and she relieves stress by playing it. Sweets are Serena's favorite food and her ambition is to open a cake shop in Arboria when peace is achieved.[1] Serena quickly gets accustomed to her sister's predicament after an initial surprise, finding her new stature to be cute. Her personal motto is to always keep the sun in your heart. Her ideal romantic partner would be someone like a hero from a romance novel. The thing she wants the most is a sequel to her favorite book, "A Ripple on the Sea of Love", which is about a romance between a human and a mermaid.

Serena has very keen senses and an ability to sense magic, as shown in a variety of cutscenes and lines of Party Talk dialogue. She often acknowledges tastes and scents that she catches, and Veronica mentions that Serena's sense of smell is particularly good. In many cutscenes, Serena will say that she "senses" magic, particularly dark magic and evil influences, as well as the powers of Yggdrasil. She also senses the presence of her sister in two cutscenes, in the rare circumstances when they are separated. Thanks to her keen senses, particularly when it comes to magic, Serena often picks up on details that the other characters miss.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

"There are those who would accuse you of bringing disaster on our world. Please, you must rest assured that they are wrong."

Serena and Veronica are the descendants of the sage Serenica, and have been trained in magical arts since they were girls. Serena is a Keeper, a person destined to guide and aid the Luminary throughout his adventure: when the Luminary has come of age and his presence becomes known to the world, Serena and Veronica leave their life in Arboria to find him. Sometime prior to the Luminary and Erik entering the city of Hotto, the twins were ambushed by a monster named Jarvis. This lead to Veronica being drained of her magical power as well as losing her adult body, and Serena was kidnapped. Once Jarvis is slain and she is rescued, Serena and Veronica reaffirm their vows to protect the Luminary and join the party.

After the destruction of the World Tree and the death of her twin sister, Serena's personality becomes bolder and more determined. She continues to stay by the Luminary's side and resolves to help him defeat Mordegon and bring peace to Erdrea. To that end, she cuts her hair short in memory of Veronica and temporarily gains access to all of her sister's magical abilities.
