Carraway

Pepe is a character found in Verdham's past in the game Dragon Quest VII. He also appears in Mentare after the party crosses the Litorud Bridge in the past.

History

Pepe works as an indentured servant, along with his father and brother, to Borlock. He tends the herb garden, which is the reason for Verdham's success as a city.

He is in love with Linda but feels that they shouldn't be together due to her impending marriage to Iwan, Borlock's son. However, Linda is in love with Pepe and constantly tries to make him see her affections for him. To add to this, Kaya tries to convince Pepe to elope with Linda so that she can have Iwan all to herself.

One day, as Pepe and Linda were talking the Rainmaker casts a curse on Verdham, summoning the Gray Rain on the residents of Verdham. Pepe, seeing that the rain turns people to stone, threw his body at Linda to cover her from the rain. As a result, his body becomes overexposed to the rain.

Verdham

The party saves Verdham with the Angel Tear. However, Pepe, due to his overexposure to the rain, isn't completely cured. The residents take him back to his house. His father asks the party to find a way to restore him. They go to Engow and talk to Pamela. They receive the Mila Drug from her and use it on Pepe who recovers instantaneously. Iwan tells his father to throw a party to celebrate his recovery.

Pepe does not take an interest in the party and sequesters himself to another part of town. He is approached by Kaya who tries to convince him to elope with Linda. He refuses, stating that it would just cause trouble for his family. It starts raining again and everyone takes shelter in their houses.

Pepe and Linda have a conversation in the rain. Linda tries to convince Pepe to run away with her, but he refuses, not wanting to cause trouble for her or his family. Linda becomes angry and tells him that when she marries Iwan, she will work him to the bone. All Pepe says in response is that she should go back inside before she catches cold. She yells at him, telling him that she never wanted to see Pepe again.

Pepe decides to leave Verdham. When the party tries to convince him that Borlock is a fair man and that running away would be cowardly, he responds that this is all true and that he should have done this a long time ago. But he says that it is too late for him. He leaves without a word to anybody.

Mentare

He founds the town of Mentare soon after leaving Verdham. At first it is just an open field but within 30 years, it becomes a successful garden. People from all over the world come to study Pepe's gardening techniques.

Pepe adopts a girl who is ironically named Linda, due to the attachment he has to that name.

Present

Pepe is buried in the Geionne Monestary. He is buried besides Linda facing Mentare. The town he created becomes so successful that it drives Verdham out of business. Verdham in the present becomes a desolate field.
