Crack is a recurring offensive spell in the Dragon Quest series and the first in the Crack family of ice spells.

Introduced in Dragon Quest III, it has become a staple commonly learned by Mages and other users of offensive magic in the series.

Crack is often depicted as a sudden growth of ice crystals that cut into a single enemy. The crystals become larger, more abundant, and far more chilling in appearance as the spell family advances, extending its target range along with its power. It is related to the stronger spells Crackle, Kacrack, and Kacrackle.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Crack is learned by Mages and Sages at level 5, and deals 25~35 points of damage for 3 MP.

The enemies drac the Vlad, mushroom mage, mermaniac, and shell slime can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

GameDescription
DQ4-NES-LOGO-ICON.png
Pierces a single enemy with razor-sharp icicles.[1]

Crack is automatically known by Borya at level 1, and deals around 10~16 damage for 2 MP. The reason for the lowered damage output is the concern over difficulty balance in the beginning of Chapter 2.

The enemies blinkster, mushroom mage, crack-billed platypunk, pterygotus, bloody hand (in the remakes), and Prima Donna can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Absent from the original SFC version, Crack targets a single foe, and deals between 25~35 damage for 3 mp. It is learned by the following playable characters.

Name Level
Madchen 1
Jailcat 1
Wiz pip 8

Prestidigitators, winter Queen, lazy eye, and hocus chimaera use it as enemies.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Milly learns this spell at level 9, as well as the dreamaera companion at level 7 in the Super Famicom version, but Milly is the only character in all other versions of the game who can cast it. It inflicts between 25~35 points of damage for 3 MP.

The enemies tree feller, goblin pixie, and shell slime use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Crack once again inflicts between 25~35 damage for 3 MP and can only be learned by reaching rank 1 of the Bone baron vocation. It is also used by High Priestess Jacqueline when she aids the party.

It can be cast by the enemies deathcargot, bloody hand, babygoyle, urnexpected, axecutioner, numpton, wiz pip, nava, and biting batboon.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

GameDescription
DQ8-LOGO-ICON.png
Pierces a single enemy with razor-sharp icicles.[2]

Crack is learned by Jessica Albert at level 10. It costs 3 MP to cast and initially deals between 20~30 damage until her Wisdom exceeds 32, with a maximum of 44~52 once her Wisdom hits 64.

The enemies Jailcat, Night sneaker, and Diemon can cast it. The Infamous Monster Fat cat can also use it.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Crack is learned by Mages at level 6 and Minstrels at level 8, and costs 3 MP. It pierces a single enemy with razor-sharp icicles, dealing 25~35 base damage before the caster's Magical Might reaches 50 and capping at 114~123 at 999 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Crack is learned by Mages at level 6, Minstrels at level 8, and Death Masters at level 56. It costs 3 MP to cast with a range of 15 meters, and damage is calculated as Magical Might x 0.24 + 9.5 with an upper limit of 86~90.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Veronica and Rab join the party having already learned Crack, and can cast it for 3 MP. It inflicts 19~29 damage, and a maximum range of 43~53 once their Magical Might reaches 174.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

IceBolt deals 25-35 points of ice damage for 5 MP. It is learned naturally by 1EyeClown, BigEye, GoatHorn, IceMan, Metaly, Mommonja, Servant, Snaily, TreeBoy, WindBeast, Yeti as long as they have 16 max MP and 30 INT. Crack will naturally upgrade into SnowStorm and later into Blizzard as the monster levels up.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

IceBolt now requires 54 Intelligence to learn. It is naturally learned by the Beavern and MerTiger. It is no longer naturally learned by the Mommonja or TreeBoy.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Crack pierces an enemy with sharp icicles. It costs 2 MP to cast, deals up to 116~122 damage, and can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Crack deals 22~30 damage before rising up to 118~124. It can no longer be learned from Aquapothecary or Niflheim. It can now be learned with 3 points in Crack & Sizz.

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Crack has the same attributes as in the previous two Monsters games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

Crack costs 3 MP and is learned via the Chilly Receptionist, Crack Afficionado, Magic Maven, and Thrill-Seeker talents. It has a base power of 25, and will deal an average of 125 damage at 499 Wisdom.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

GameDescription

Flings forth a flurry of ice balls that can freeze foes solid.[3]

Crack is the main spell that Jessica can cast in battle and can be learned for 4 skill points. She fires three ice shards in front of her for 6 MP. As her level increases, she can upgrade the spell and also cast Crackle and Kacrack by charging up Crack. Like all ice-based spells and skills in the game, it has a chance to freeze enemies in their tracks.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

Crack costs 4 MP and deals Ice-element damage to one enemy. It is learned by cutie slimes, silhouettes, pearly wights, queen slimes, and tundrackies.

Dragon Quest Walk[edit]

Crack costs 7 MP to cast and inflicts a small amount of Crack-type spell damage to one enemy. It can be cast by any character that is equipped with the Glumbrella.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

Crack is known naturally by crack-billed platypunk, drackolyte, drohl drone, frostburn, jailcat, khalamari kid, mermaniac, mushroom mage, seaslime, shell slime, and slimecicle at level 1 and costs 4 MP to cast. It has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction and inflicts minor Crack-type spell damage to one enemy. It can also be taught to any unit by using an ability scroll. Santa Krystalinda also possesses the perk Icy Follow-Up, which automatically casts Crack at an enemy that is being attacked by an ally if they are within range.

Enemy versions[edit]

Crack will deal 16~24 damage when used against the player in III, and 12~20 in V, VI, and VII. In IV and VIII it deals 10~16 damage, and in IX it hits for 12~21.
