Rainiac is a boss faced in the past in Greenthumb Gardens in Dragon Quest VII.
Characteristics[edit]
The Rainiac has the same appearance as a Tongue fu fighter. It is a squat bipedal pink anteater with a long yellow snout, its blue tongue sticking out of it. It utilizes its tongue to whip opponents or lick them into stunned submission. Compared to its weaker cousins, the Rainiac has gained the ability to cast healing magic, can breathe out cold air, and is quick enough to act twice in a single turn. The beast has disdain for humans, as it only lives to spread the Grey Rain that causes petrification and expresses shock at finding that the party themselves have not been turned to stone yet. The Rainiac mostly survives on a diet of nectar, but it states that it doesn't have a problem drinking human blood, either.
Synopsis[edit]
Rainiac is the cause of the Grey Rain that turns humans into stone. It is very potent and only can be cured with the Angel Tears, provided that the statues are intact. However, if the statues are too eroded, the Angel Tears, will not be effective. Also, depending on the exposure, the Angel Tears, will only succeed in removing the stone curse but the stiffness will remain, in which case Palmela's prescription is effective.
Rainiac passed through Regenstein 50 years before the party arrives. There, the people were eroded by the elements and are unable to return to normal. Joseph, a resident of Regenstein, was saved because he was hiding in his hideout, protected from erosion. Clayman was also saved because he was not in the town at the time. When the party uses the Angel Tears, on Regenstein, Joseph returns to normal. Now he and Clayman journey to other towns warning them about the horrors of the Grey Rain.
Rainiac recently passes through Greenthumb Gardens and curses the residents with the Grey Rain, turning them to stone. It is at this time that the party arrives. He is surprised that the party hasn't been turned to stone so he proceeds to attack the party. However he is defeated. Rainiac boasts that the party will not be able to save the residents of Greenthumb Gardens. But the party uses the Angel Tears, and saves the town.

Strategy[edit]
Rainiac has about 450 HP and it can attack twice in one turn. Its regular attack cause 15-20 HP. Its Tongue Lashing will cause one of your party members to lose a turn. The main attack worth watching out for is its Cool Breath, which can deal around 15 damage to the entire party. The Rainiac is also able to heal itself, but due to its low MP pool, it can only cast it twice.
Maribel should use Sap twice to remove its defense. Kiefer should use the Focus Strength and Flame Slash combo on Rainiac while the Hero and Ruff attack regularly. At this point, Rainiac shouldn't cause that much trouble.
