Zamoksva is a kingdom found in Dragon Quest IV.

Zamoksva Castle is the home of Tsarevna Alena and her father, Tsar Stepan. It is also the home of Kiryl and Borya, and is the starting location for Chapter 2.

AppearancesEdit

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the ChosenEdit

The land ruled by the Tsar of Zamoksva includes Zamoksva Castle, the town of Zalenagrad, the village of Taborov, the town of Vrenor, the Vault of Vrenor, the land of the annual Desert Bazaar, the Birdsong Tower, and the Shrine to Endor. The kingdom is completely surrounded by ocean, but nearby to the east is the kingdom of Ballymoral, to the southeast is the kingdom of Endor, to the southwest is the Dunplundrin Island, and to the northwest is the Island Kingdom of Canalot.

The castle itself is a 3-story structure with sleeping quarters for the royal family on the top floor, a throne room on the middle floor, and a treasure room, a courtyard, a kitchen, sleeping quarters for the kingdom's soldiers, and a religious study where Kiryl undergoes his priestly training. In the treasure room are two important quest items obtained in Chapter 5, namely the Flute of Revelation and the Magma Staff.

Alena departs the castle after kicking down a wall in her room, annoyed that her father disapproves of her tomboyish nature and refusal to allow her outside the ramparts. Predicting such a thing would happen, the Tsar ordered Borya and Kiryl to keep an eye on his daughter while she traips through the kingdom. Upon reaching the Desert Bazaar after a series of misadventures, Alena is informed by a castle guard that the Tsar has experienced night terrors and is rendered unable to speak. Returning to Zamoksva to see the poor state of her father, Alena looks for a clue and is aided by Joseph Starling of Zalenagrad, who explains that a drop of Birdsong nectar always cures him whenever his own larynx clamps shut.

Alena, Kiryl and Borya retrieve the nectar and administer it to the Tsar, who regains his voice and acknowledges that his daughter does not need his overbearing protection: she is free to go where she likes as long as she takes care of herself. Overjoyed, Alena sets forth for the tournament in Endor. Once it is over, Alena returns to find the inhabitants of the castle have mysteriously disappeared. Alena and her companions head out to find out what happened to them, concluding the second chapter of the game.

Later on in Chapter 5, Zamoksva becomes the base for Balzack and his minions. Once Balzack is defeated by the Hero and party, the monsters vacate (although random encounters can still happen) and the treasure room becomes accessible. Finally after beating the entire game, the inhabitants of the castle return.

Remake changesEdit

  • In the NES, due to it being possible to obtain Nectar from the Birdsong Tower after getting the Thief's Key, the king can be given the nectar upon learning of his condition. The remakes prevents the party from doing this quest out of sequence as the Elves don't show up until speaking to Starek, Josef and the item shop owner from the Desert Bazaar at night.
  • During Chapter 5 in the NES version, the entire castle is accessible even before Balzack's defeat. In the remake, the upstairs area is blocked off temporarily when Balzack is present.

EtymologyEdit

  • In the NES localization, Santohaim (roughly, home of saints; -heim is a common suffix for German place names) was renamed Santeem. In the DS localizations, the Alena chapter was given a Russian theme and Santohaim became Zamoksva.
