The Axolhotl is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is a salamander swordsman that specializes in using fire-based techniques.

Characteristics[edit]

Axolhotls are anthropomorphic salamander warriors with bright orange skin and green scattered on their external gills, limbs, and tails. They wear a black tabards and helmets, both decorated with gold, and they wield golden swords and shields. Etymology[edit]

The axolhotl's name is a play on the axolotl, a species of salamander from Mexico, and the word "hot". Axolotls themselves are named after Xolotl, the Aztec god of fire and lightning, who could turn into an axolotl in order to disguise himself.
