Barbarus is a large black dragon that is allied with the Gittish Empire in Dragon Quest IX.

He is Greygnarl's look-alike and mortal enemy. He, along with the rest of the Empire, was defeated over 300 years ago by Greygnarl, and, also like the rest of the Empire, was brought back with more power and attempted to obliterate Upover, but Greygnarl stopped him by flying in front of the giant energy ball. Barbarus is also the dragon that attacks the player on the Starflight Express with Hootingham-Gore on his back. He is last encountered in the 9th floor in the Realm of the Mighty where Corvus uses him to attack the Hero/Heroine but is defeated, allowing the Hero to continue going to Corvus.

It is revealed when the player check Greygnarl's spot in the Defeated Monsters List after the player defeats Greygnarl in his Grotto is that he and Barbarus are brothers.

Barbarus has gone on to appear in other games in the Dragon Quest series as both as a boss and a recruitable monster.

Barbarus appears as a S-rank member of the Dragon family as part of the Dragon Quest IX event, appearing on his own banner alongside Axolhotl. He is faced as a boss in Chapter 3, Episode 4: Battle Against Barbarus and Chapter 5, Episode 3: Another Battle Against Barbarus, as well as the Light & Dark Dragon Howl special boss battle alongside his brother Greygnarl. Barbarus can participate in Stella's Battle Road as a party member.
