Giant tortoise shell is a recurring item in the Dragon Quest series. It is a huge, sturdy shell left behind by a monster that is used as a crafting material.

Giant tortoise shell is an ingredient for crafting weapons or in Alchemy to increase Defence. It can be dropped by various monsters, including King crabs, Handsome crabs, Masqueraiders, Terrorceratopses, Tyrannoceratops, Trikaceratopses, and Wyrtoises.
Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]
Giant tortoise shell can be dropped by Walking corpses and Overkilling machines or received from King Flaminio in exchange for 5 Mini medals on the Stonecloud. It can be sold for 80 gold each or is used to create Life rings and the classic recipes for the Banishing bell and Beckoning bell in the Alchemy Pot. Three giant tortoise shells are required to complete Quest #58: My Cup Runneth Under and two giant tortoise shells, along with two spellbound boughs, are required to complete Quest #79: Maps to the Max 4.

Giant tortoise shell is used as a material for improving various accessories. It can be dropped by Ghouls and Overkilling machines or can be picked up from sparkly spots in the Fetid Foothills.
