The spell Woosh is a recurring offensive wind spell in the Dragon Quest series. It causes a small whirlwind to rip into a group of enemies for around 8~24 damage in most appearances.

Woosh originally debuted in Dragon Quest II where it was learned by the Princess of Moonbrooke. Since then, it is typically learned by Priests and similarly pious characters and tends to be one of the only offensive spells they learn. It is related to the stronger spells Swoosh, Kaswoosh, and Kaswooshle.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

Woosh is learned by the Princess of Moonbrooke at Level 4. It deals 17~33 damage for 4 MP. It may fail to deal damage depending on the targets' resistances to fire spells such as Sizz.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]

Woosh is learned by Priests and Sages at Level 12, and will deal between 8~24 for 4 MP. It may fail to deal damage depending on the targets' resistances to wind spells.

The monsters Belisha beakon and Lump wizard use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

Woosh is learned by Meena at level 9, dealing 8~24 for damage for a reduced cost of 2 MP. These are the parameters that will define the spell for subsequent games.

The enemies Cyclown and Whizzard use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

Name Level
Hawk man --
Rotten apple 5
Conkuistador 8
Hero 8

The targets' resistances to wind now affects the damage dealt, rather than the chance of this spell missing.

Growlbear uses it as enemy only.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

Woosh is already known by Nevan upon joining the party. Other characters can learn it by advancing to rank 2 of the Priest vocation.

It is also used by the enemy Gustodian.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

Woosh is learned by Priests at the second rank and by the Draguar monster vocation at the first rank.

It can be cast by the monsters Conkuistador, Zepling, and Sunken spirit.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

Giant moths also use it.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]

Minstrels learn Woosh at level 12 and Luminaries learn it at level 11. Woosh deals 8~24 base damage for 2 MP. The spell will start to reach it's cap of 61~77 once the caster's Magical Might reaches 50.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Luminaries and Minstrels learn Woosh at levels 12 and 18 respectively, while Pirates know the spell by default at level 50, and it costs 3 MP to cast. The spell's strength is calculated as Magical Might x 0.185 + 7.35 for a base range of 9~19 and a cap of 23~33. Like a real twister, Woosh will strike enemies within its range multiple times.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Serena and Sylvando will learn Woosh at level 14 and 20, respectively, ant it costs 5 MP to cast. The base range is 12~36, and will reach the cap of 36~60 once either character's Magical Might hits 80.

Dragon Quest Monsters[edit]

Called Infernos in this game, it requires the monster to reach level 2 with 10 MP and 21 Intelligence. It grows into Infermore when the monster reaches level 11 with 38 MP and 56 Intelligence. It is naturally learned by the Andreal, Facer, GoatHorn, Gulpple, Lionex, MadPecker, WhiteKing, WindBeast and WindMerge.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2[edit]

Infernos now requires 38 Intelligence to learn and 101 Intelligence to upgrade. It is naturally learned by the CragDevil, Garudian, LandOwl, Sickler and Vampirus.

It is already known by Maam in her Nayle Outfit when she joins the party and can be unlocked by obtaining the Pixie Pole from Treasure Hunts.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Woosh appears as the Hero's up special move in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is a small whirlwind that sends the Hero up a short distance and costs 5 MP, and is surprisingly quick to cast--the spell activates on the seventh frame after the player's button input. Nearby opponents will also be sent into the air the same distance after taking 7% damage. Holding the special button down will turn the move into Swoosh and then Kaswoosh.

Enemy versions[edit]

When cast by an enemy in III, Woosh deals 6~18 damage. This would be the standard until VIII, where the damage was reduced to 5~14. Beginning with IX it was raised to 6~21.
