"So we use the Keystone to open the Door of Departure and head out into the world, huh? Sounds easy enough. You better believe I'm coming with you!"
—Erik, at Cobblestone Falls
The Keystone is a key item in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. It is a blue jewel that unlocks the Door of Departure, a teleportal shrine that links the Emerald Coast to the Hotto Steppe.

The Keystone was acquired by Chalky during his adventures as a younger man, a tale he recounts in his Memoirs of a Treasure Hunter. He had been searching all over the world for the legendary Rainbough in hopes of selling it, but when offered the choice between that branch and the Keystone, he chose the stone instead. After acquiring the gem, he returned home to Cobblestone and held on to it for many years. A conversation with a future version of his adoptive grandson convinced Chalky to hide the Keystone in a secret spot near town for the Hero to retrieve in a time of need; it was buried together with a letter from himself and also the letter the Hero's mother left in the basket he was found in as a baby.
In the present day, the Hero follows Chalky's instructions and uncovers this package. While being pursued by Sir Hendrik and his soldiers through the Emerald Coast, the Hero and Erik are able to use the Keystone to enter the Door of Departure in the nick of time, escaping through the teleportal to the distant Hotto Steppe.
