The Fright bulb is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first introduced in Dragon Quest XI. They are botanical slimes that resemble freshly-sprouted shoots, lacking the ripe red coloration and flower of the Bite bulbs. Their Japanese namesake is a reference to the mythical mandrake plant, which would let loose an ear-splitting scream when uprooted.
Characteristics[edit]
Fright bulbs are brown slimes with a tuft of leaves sprouting from the top of its head. Its head is perched on top of a light green bulb with a large pair of leaves that they flap in order to hover in midair and smack enemies for self-defence. In battle, they can shout suddenly in order to startle unsuspecting adventurers much like their mythological namesakes.

Dragon Quest Builders 2[edit]
While Fright Bulb itself does not appear as a monster in Builders 2, it makes a cameo as a decorative item.
Sometimes, it can replace a flower at dawn if the following conditions are met:
- The player is on Isle of Awakening or a Buildertopia.
- The terrain is fertile soil. (Earth blocks, humus blocks, etc. Terrains such as Arid Earth blocks won't work,)
- There are at least two additional flowers in nearby blocks.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]
Fright Bulb is one of the four possible starter monsters. Monty will offer it if the player answers "Yes" to both of his questions: “Would you say you prefer lovable monster to more rugged types?” and “And do you like more compact monsters?”.
