Pteranodons are flying reptiles distinguished by their large wings, fang-filled beaks, and long tails. Ironically enough, the name ''Pteranodon'' means "toothless wing" in Ancient Greek. They have white feathered skin, yellow beaks, and the leathery membrane that make up their wings are grey. These prehistoric fliers attack from the skies and can char enemies with their fire magic, thankfully being limited by their low MP pools. The pteranodon has been a member of both the [[Bird family]] and the [[Dragon family]], depending on the game. After their original appearance, the pterosaurs only appeared regularly in spinoff games in the series, eventually returning in ''X'' after 22 years.

The Pteranodon is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IV. It is based on the Rhamphorhynchus genus of pterosaurs from the late Jurassic era.

Characteristics

Pteranodons are flying reptiles distinguished by their large wings, fang-filled beaks, and long tails. Ironically enough, the name Pteranodon means "toothless wing" in Ancient Greek. They have white feathered skin, yellow beaks, and the leathery membrane that make up their wings are grey. These prehistoric fliers attack from the skies and can char enemies with their fire magic, thankfully being limited by their low MP pools. The pteranodon has been a member of both the Bird family and the Dragon family, depending on the game. After their original appearance, the pterosaurs only appeared regularly in spinoff games in the series, eventually returning in X after 22 years.
