Elemental Family (Japanese Katakana: エレメント Romanji: Eremento ) refers to the monsters Dragon Quest series that are formed mainly by elements: Fire, Water, Wind or Earth. Usually they have a degree of intangibility to their appearances, and haunt areas similar to their elemental type (E.g. Live lava are found around volcanoes, firn fiends in tundra, etc.). In some games, members of this family are included within the Material family when there are not enough distinct elementals to warrant a separate classification of their own.
While there may appear to be an inconsistency regarding earth-themed elementals not being included in the material family when golems and rockbombs are, a closer look will show that material monsters are all constructed beings of artificial origin, where as elementals are pure entities of natural phenomena that have come to life on their own.
Effective weapons and skills
Wands are effective against elementals in the eleventh game, dealing 10% more damage. As of the ninth game, the Wind Sickles skill deals 50% more damage to elementals regardless if they happen to be wind-themed themselves.
