Neos (聖地ゴルド) is an island in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King; it is also known as the Holy Isle of Neos and is located in the center of the world map. It can be visited as soon as the player acquires the ship.

Story

The Holy Isle of Neos is one of the three sacred sites of the world, along with Maella Abbey and Savella Cathedral. Its most notable landmark is the enormous statue of the Goddess located there, where people from all over come to pray in Her presence.[1]The origins of the island date back to the age of mythology after the Godbird Empyrea after the world. A lone monk traveled to the isle and discovered the image of the Goddess perfectly carved into the rock face and declared it to be a holy site. It is unknown whether the statue always looked like that or if it was sculpted by someone.[2] According to Angelo, only royalty and the aristocracy are actually allowed to get close to shrine in front of the statue itself and it is where the Lord High Priest of the clergy is coronated. [3] A pair of Templar knight guards are posted in order to keep anyone from getting closer to the statue.

If the party visits the isle after gaining access to the ship, they have an encounter with Marcello and High Priest Rolo, who scoffs at Marcello's sudden appointment as the Abbot of Maella Abbey due to his common upbringing. As the two leave, Angelo has an uncomfortable encounter with his older brother, who reminds him that they still have to deal with Dhoulmagus.

Much later in the story, the party returns to Neos during Marcello's coronation as the new Lord High Priest after he comes in control of the Godbird sceptre. With the help of the Godbird's soulstone, the party is able to confront Marcello and defeat him in battle. However, defeating him unwittingly allows Rhapthorne to take control of Marcello's body and he becomes possessed. Now with all of the Seven Sages dead, the Lord of Darkness unseals his body by hurling the sceptre at the Goddess statue and destroying it, unleashing the Black Citadel into the skies. In the aftermath, the isle is in complete ruin, leaving a giant crater in its center. Marcello is found clinging to the side of a precipice about to fall off when he is rescued by Angelo before falling. He states that he is going to allow his older brother to live so that he can remember that the person he despised the most took pity on him. A despondent Marcello leaves in disgrace, despite his serious injuries, throwing his captain's ring at Angelo since it means nothing to him anymore.

The Origins of the Goddess Statue

'The origins of the Goddess Statue on the Holy Isle of Neos can be traced back to the days of the legendary Seven Sages.

'But was it really possible to carve such an elaborate stature using ancient technology?

'Or was its creation a miracle? Did the divine and all-powerful Goddess herself transform the mountain into a statue?

'Alas, we'll probably never know. The smiling Goddess Statue remains silent on the matter to this day.'

References

  1. Templar: "You can only enter the shrine to pray at New Year, or when special events are taking place. The likes of High Priest Rolo and Abbot Marcello are allowed in at any time of course. But that's because of their status in the church."
  2. NPC in town: "The origins of the Holy Isle of Neos go all the way back to the era of mythology. When this island was just a nameless rock in the sea. After the Godbird Empyrea saved the world, a lone monk visited here. When he saw the image of the Goddess so clearly defined in the rock-face, he proclaimed Neos to be a holy land. No one knows whether it looked like this from the beginning, or if the statue was shaped by the hand of a master sculptor as some say. Either way, this is sacred territory now. Wouldn't you agree, my friend?"
  3. Angelo: "Have you heard? The general public aren't allowed to pray to the Goddess statue for salvation. Only royals and aristocracy have permission to go inside and pray directly to Her. I suppose their kind need more salvation than common folk!"
