Scholar's cap
The scholar's cap is a recurring piece of headwear in the series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a hat specially designed for spellcasters that enhances their magical abilities.

The scholar's cap has a Defence bonus of +33 and a Wisdom bonus of +10. It can be made in the Alchemy Pot and can only be equipped by Jessica and Angelo. The hat can be sold for 5,750 gold. It can also be upgraded further into a Thinking cap or used to make a Sage's robe in the Alchemy Pot, as well.
Dragon Quest XEdit
The scholar's cap has a Defence bonus of +24, a Style bonus of +8, a Magical Might bonus of +22, a Magical Mending bonus of +21, and increases the wearer's Weight by 1. It has an equipment level of 50. It can be equipped by Mages, Priests, Sages, Fortune Tellers, Druids, and Death Masters. In this game, the cap has a completely different design and is part of a full set that includes a robe divided into parts for the torso and lower body, as well as shoes. Each part can be crafted with tailoring.
- In the Offline version of the game, it can be equipped by Raguas, Fuura, and Duston. It also slightly increases resistance against being stunned and put to sleep.

The recipe book Fine Fashions for Philosophers contains the recipe for the scholar's cap. It can be received as a reward for completing Quest #43 at the Warrior's Rest Inn.
