Watchers
"LONG AGO, ALL WAS PEACE. ALL WAS HARMONY. YGGDRASIL BLESSED US. FAITHFUL SERVANTS OF WORLD TREE.
BUT SHADOW FELL. HORROR FROM ABOVE.
CALASMOS."
—a Watcher
The Watchers (神の民 Kami no min) are a strange race of beings in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, hailing from the Havens Above. They are led by their venerable elder, Eegoltap.
Characteristics[edit]
Watchers are roly-poly humanoids with skin tones varying from olive green to orange-brown or purple. They have bulbous red lips, a single tentacle growing from the top of their heads, lack noses, and have very simple round ear holes. Their voices are unnaturally high-pitched, and in the English version, their dialogue is fully capitalized. No Watchers have hair on their heads, but several have mustaches or beards, including Eegoltap.
The Watchers are truly ancient, and may predate all other life on Erdrea if a book found in the Havens Above is to be believed. Individuals can live for an extraordinarily long time; the elder Eegoltap was alive to witness the Age of Heroes and personally met Erdwin and his companions.
Like the elves of Tryan Gully, the Watchers are comfortable living among monsters, and can inspire good behavior in even the nastiest of slimes.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
In the second act, the Havens Above have been mostly destroyed after the fall of Yggdrasil, and only a single young Watcher remains in the Temple of Dawn on the last floating island. This youngster was protected from Mordegon's onslaught by the Guiding Light, which he invites the party to borrow. After the Hero is shown several visions of Erdwin's party forging the Sword of Light, the last Watcher chimes in to let him know about the Battleground, where precious ores might be found.
In the third act, with the World Tree not having been destroyed and Mordegon never having achieved his maximum power, the Havens remain fully intact and the entire race of Watchers are still alive. The party meet with Eegoltap, who restores them to the level of strength they achieved in Act 2. He asks the party to find Yggdrasil's hidden seedlings throughout the world; when this task is complete, he gives them the Wheel of Time so they can speak with Serenica in the Tower of Lost Time.
Various Watchers offer sidequests to the party, with rewards worthy of the preparation to take on the ultimate evil.
