Yggdragon

Yggdragon (聖竜 Seiryū, lit: "Holy dragon") is a dragon goddess who appears in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. After fighting the Dark One Calasmos in the far distant past, she was reborn as the World Tree, Yggdrasil. In either form, she is the supreme deity of Erdrea.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Yggdrasil is a central element of Dragon Quest XI's story, but her draconic incarnation is only rarely alluded to, most notably in the party's audience with Eegoltap in the third act, where a Watcher explains the history of Yggdragon and Erdrea as related on a mural.

Yggdragon does not make a personal appearance until the game's final cutscene. When the Hero returns the Sword of Light to Yggdrasil, he, Veronica and Serena are shown a vision of Yggdragon, who recounts her story and bestows the title of Erdrick upon the Luminary.

Yggdragon also appears as part of the Yggdragon's Blessing pep power, which grants temporary invincibility to the party.

Relation to other divine dragons

• Though the connection is not absolutely certain, based on Yggdragon's comments at the end of Dragon Quest XI's third act and certain changes made to the HD-2D remakes of the Erdrick trilogy, it is very likely that Yggdragon is the predecessor, ancestor or previous incarnation of the Dragon Queen from Dragon Quest III and her descendants the Dragonlord and the Dragonlord's great-grandson. Whether she has any connection to the Yggdrasil seen in Dragon Quest II remains a mystery.
