Holy water is a monster repellent in the Dragon Quest series. It is used to avoid random encounters, simulating the Holy Protection spell. Beginning with Dragon Quest III, it can be also used to deal minor damage to monsters by throwing a vial at them in battle. From Dragon Quest IX onwards its function was altered slightly to simulate the Vanish ability due to the removal of random encounters.

Holy water bottles can be crafted in the final chapter and in free play mode in the Diviner's alter using pure water.

It's primary use is for purifying the cursed land of Tantegel. By doing so, circular areas of 9x9 blocks can be restored to their former glory. Purification is key to obtaining certain materials needed to craft new block types, items and equipment.

Aside from it's main use, the holy water can be used to craft other items like the Sheen salts -that remove cursed equipment- and the Yggdrasil Essence -which revives the player instantaneously if they had it in their inventory-.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit]

A replica of a holy water flask appears as treasure No. 285 in the Items category, with a base value of 20,000.

Captain N: The Game Master[edit]

Kevin Keene/Captain N and Princess Lana purchased this at the weapon shop along a map to the Cave of the Axe knight as they're the only thing left. Though the price for the water is unspecified, Kevin and Lana were able to get it for 6 Gold Coins as the shopkeeper considered it a hero's discount.

Unlike Dragon Quest, the effect of the water is that it can be used against evil magic. It's ultimately used to remove the Cursed necklace from Simon Belmont.
