Dragon Quest Rivals[edit]

Etymology[edit]

  • The beast's English name is a combination of Gnu, an alternate name for the common wildebeest, and Uriel, one of the seven Archangels in Christianity. This angelic reference is shared by its pallet-swap cousins, the gnucifers.
  • The gnuriel's original name in Japanese, Death Gorgon (デスゴーゴン), references the Gorgons of Greek mythology. The most famous of which are the three sisters Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale, who were women described with venomous snakes in the place of hair and possessed the ability to turn those who beheld them into stone with their horrifying visages. The gnuriel's bestiary description in X references the myth by stating that anyone who bites into their meat is cursed with petrification.
