The ruinous shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series. This cursed black shield features an ominous design with multiple eyes similar to those found on the Mad cap. True to its name, equipping this shield will typically cause the wearer to take increased damage from many sources. In later games, it is possible to remove the curse from the shield with the use of Alchemy and some Saint's ashes.

Appearances[edit]

Watch out! There's more to this shield than meets the eye.

The ruinous shield is cursed and will set the wearer's defence to 0, while also increasing damage taken from Frizz, Sizz, Bang, Crack, Woosh spells by 20 points. It is dropped by Dragon zombies at a rate of 1/32 in all versions and can bought on the Nadiria T'N'T board for 4,200 gold in the remakes.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

The ruinous shield is sold in Greedmore Valley for 5,300 gold. It increases defence by +62, style by +5, and increases the damage taken from magic and breath damage by +50

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

The shield increases defence by +52, style by +5, and once more increases elemental damage taken. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, and Aishe, and it found at the end of the game in the Cave to Yet Another World. By this point it will have no purpose beyond the novelty, but it can be sold for 2,650 gold.

An unlucky shield surrounded by an air of danger.

The ruinous shield is cursed and will increase damage taken from elemental attacks by 50 points. It can be sold for 2,900 gold or be turned into a metal king shield in the Alchemy Pot. The shield is rarely dropped by hell's gatekeepers, and can also be found in a chest on the Dark Ruins Island, only accessible with the Godbird's soulstone. In the 3DS version, another shield can be obtained in Memories Lane.
