The Dark dullahan is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a headless knight wielding a spiked flail that originated from the World of Darkness.
Characteristics[edit]
Dark dullahans are undead men-at-arms whose armaments are colored all in shades of dark greys and black, like other monsters that reside in the World of Darkness. In their right hands, they wield wicked flails that they drag along the ground and a shield with a hideous screaming visage in the left hands. The dullahans are well-protected, donning breastplates, greaves, and gauntlets all made of plate mail over chain mail, and faulds made of scales. From their shoulders, they wear ragged black capes. The knights are able to psyche themselves up in battle before unleashing devastating attacks with their flails. They are also able to call for aid by summoning dark condors to assist them. Starting with XI, the dark dullahan gained two mounted counterparts in the form of the Headless Honcho and Headless hunters, both being closer to its original mythological inspiration.
Appearances[edit]

Reappearing from Version 5.4 of the game onwards, it is first encountered in the gorge leading to the temple where the Goddess Luciana is reborn. From this game onwards, they are always encountered after the Dullahan. They are able to cast Oomph, while they swing their maces with reckless abandon, and also gain a new attack known as Hell Circle that can envelop characters in illusions and place a curse on them.
