"By the holies! Just holdin' this weapon gives me the shivers. Sure, it deals out the damage, like, but it's a devil of a sword altogether, so it is."

—Torneko, when he appraises the massacre sword

The Massacre sword is a recurring sword in the Dragon Quest series. Despite being very powerful, it is a Cursed weapon that reduces the wielder's Defence to 0. Depending on the game, it is either able to cast Kasap when used as a tool in battle or has the ability to target all enemies when attacking.

Characteristics[edit]

The sword is made from a bluish-grey metal and has jagged edges all over. The crossguard is decorated with a sinister-looking skull and there are jewels on both the edge and the hilt.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

The Massacre sword has an Attack bonus of +120, can be equipped by Ragnar and Torneko, and casts Kasap when used as a tool in battle. It is a cursed piece of equipment that reduces the wearer's Defence to 0. The sword can be found in a treasure chest at Porthrunnel's inn behind a locked door that can be opened with the Ultimate key. It can be sold for a mere 150 gold, but it is not recommended to do so as there is only one in the game.

  • In remake versions of the game, the 9th Chosen One can equip it without becoming cursed, and the sword becomes one of his best options prior to obtaining the Pandemonic sword.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]

The Massacre sword has an Attack bonus of +120 and can be equipped by Sancho, Tuppence, Slime knight, Restless armour, Blizzybody, Warhog, Moosifer, Pip fighter, and Conkuistador. Once again, it is a cursed weapon that reduces the wielder's Defence to 0 when equipped. The sword has been upgraded to hit all enemies now, and possesses this trait in all subsequent games. It can be found in a treasure chest on B2F of Estark's Labyrinth. It can be sold for a mere 375 gold, but once again, only one can be acquired in the game.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]

The Massacre sword has an Attack bonus of +95, a Style bonus of +15, and can be equipped by Carver, Terry, Amos, Lizzie, and Goowain. It targets all enemies in battle when attacking, but it is cursed and reduces the wielder's Defence to 0. The sword can be purchased in Greedmore Valley for 29,000 gold and sold for 21,750 gold. Tormentaurs have a 1256 chance of dropping them, as well.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]

The Massacre sword has an Attack bonus of +95, a Style bonus of +15, and can only be equipped by Kiefer and Aishe. Once again, it targets all enemies in battle when attacking, but it is a cursed item that reduces the wielder's Defence to 0. It can be received as a prize from the Lucky Panel at the Casino at either Buccanham or the Grand Slum version of the Immigrant Town/final version of the Haven. The sword can also be dropped rarely by Mandrake monarchs and Night knights. It can be sold for 14,500 gold.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, the Massacre sword can be received as a reward for the first-time completion of the Spooky Ruins DLC Tablet. Sconstrosities have a 1256 chance of dropping them, as well. It can also be received as a reward by completing a custom Traveller's Tablet with either a Mandrake monarch or a Major disaster as the boss. In the original Sony PlayStation version, it is not possible to acquire the sword through normal means until later in the game, meaning Kiefer never has the chance to equip it. However, it is possible to do so through tablets in the Nintendo 3DS version.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit]

The Massacre sword is a S-rank sword that can be acquired as part of the Dragon Quest VI event by clearing the Treasure Trove Guard stages in To the Undersea Treasury. It has an Attack bonus of +30, a max HP bonus of +30, and has three slots for Alchemy Effects. Although the penalty is not as harsh as the main series, the sword still reduces the wielder's DEF by 40. The potential alchemy effects include boosting the ATK and max HP bonuses further or gaining an AGL bonus.
