The Magus is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line.

It is a lowly spellcaster that serves a great evil.

Characteristics

Magi are Humanoid spellcasters. They wear white robes with the bat insignia of the Children of Hargon on the front and a green and red triangular pattern at the ends of their sleeves, a long green cape around their necks with a red jeweled brooch, and red shoes. In their right hands, they wield a tall scepter topped with a green crystal orb. As one might expect from the name, the Magus is a magic user. Like many other humanoid monsters in the series, they are now depicted with five fingers on their hands in modern appearances instead of four. According to their bestiary descriptions in IX, the magi are formerly men who sold their souls to evil in order to acquire magic power.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2

Magi reappear in the SP version of Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key as recruitable monsters. They are E-rank monsters of the Demon family.

Etymology

A magus is a Latin word which means magician or sorcerer, derived from the ancient Greek μάγος (mágos). In the ancient world, a magus was a priest of the Zoroastrian religion. Three Magi were famously said to have visited the newborn Jesus bearing gifts of myrrh, gold, and frankincense.

Trivia

  • One of the main characters of Chrono Trigger (which had its artwork done by Akira Toriyama and was also released by Square Enix) shares the name of this monster.
  • The descriptions for the Magus in the Heroes series of games makes reference to the fact that they did not wield staffs in their in-game sprites in earlier games, despite wielding them in their artwork.
