The Whackolyte is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line.
They are evil priests with a wide array of spells at their fingertips.
Characteristics[edit]
In the previous localizations of Dragon Quest II, it was known as "Evil Clown" ("EvilClown" in the GBC version); however, it is a different monster from the "EvilClown" that appeared in the old localization of Dragon Quest VII, which is now known as Wrecktor in the modern localization.
Whackolytes are Humanoid spellcasters that are distinguishable by their horned masks and the wicked spiked morning stars they wield in each hand. They wear white robes with the bat insignia of the Children of Hargon on the front and long capes with a jeweled brooch. The masks covering their heads have a singular red jewel "eye" on the front and the curved horns, the ends of their sleeves, and their capes are red, as well. When these mages reappeared many years later in X, their horns, ends of their sleeves, and capes all became green instead of red. This design has appeared in most modern depictions. In more modern appearances, the masked spellcasters began to be depicted with five fingers on their hands instead of four, like many other humanoid monsters in the series. Their repertoire of spells consists of fire magic and various support spells, making them one of the few monsters capable of healing their allies in battle.
In the Nintendo 3DS version of VII, an alternate design for the Whackolyte appeared that has blue horns on its mask, a blue cape, blue at the ends of its sleeves, and only carrying a single Morning star in its hands.

In the original NES version, a Whackolyte (known as "Evil Clown" in the old localization) can be fought in Midenhall Castle. It is an optional fight that the player can elect to skip if they so choose. It carries the Lightning staff when the player defeats it. In the remakes, they were replaced by a Wrecktor (known as "Magus" in the old localization of II for Game Boy Color).
