The Foo dog is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first introduced in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen.

CharacteristicsEdit

Foo dogs are large Beasts that are a cross between lions and rabid dogs with silvery white fur, a golden mane and tail and gold tufts of hair on its legs and paws. It has glowing yellow eyes and drool trailing from its fang-lined mouth. In the Monsters spinoff games, the foo dogs are part of the Material family as a reference to the guardian lion dog statues they are based on.

EtymologyEdit

Foo dog is a corruption of fu dog, another term for the Chinese lion guardians frequently seen in statue form at the entrances of buildings. In Japan, they are known as shishi or komainu.

The two Foo dogs being paired with Master Kung can form a name that is based on the word "kung-fu" (Master Kung and Foo dog).
