The black dragon is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, introduced in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. It is a large, bipedal dragon covered in pitch-black scales.
Characteristics
Black dragons are powerful dragons with a large pair of wings on their backs, a long tail, white horns, black scales, and light brown on their undersides and wing membranes. However, when the dragons first appeared, their entire bodies were pitch black.
The black dragon is a dangerous monster that utilizes nearly every part of its body as a weapon. It can bite down on enemies with their razor-sharp fangs, swipe at multiple foes with their long and powerful tails, and it can breathe out intense flames, as well of those of pure darkness while casting magic, though only in X. In some spinoff games, they are also capable of breathing out flames of pure darkness or exhaling intense blasts of wind, as well. Their scales make them impervious to many forms of attack. In most cases, they are not as powerful as their golden-scaled cousins, with the Joker series of games being a notable exception.
Appearances
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Dragon Quest X
First appearing in Version 3.3 of the game, Black Dragons are first encountered in the darkness region of Nagaland, while also being encountered in the Magical Survey Area of the Poppet Continent during the Version 4 story. They are much stronger than in V, being able to cast Kazammle, fire off a Disruptive Wave, and swing their tails, among other abilities like Total War Cry.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
"Phew! That was way too close for comfort. What's that thing doing under the castle anyway?"
—Erik to the Luminary after narrowly escaping the dragon's wrath
A black dragon plays a major role at the beginning of the game during the Luminary and Erik's escape from the dungeons of Heliodor Castle. After losing the trail of a group of Heliodorian guards in the sewers, the duo find themselves in a dragon's lair and accidentally rouse the black dragon sleeping there. They are forced to make a run for it as it is far too powerful for them to face at this point.
Although it is possible to defeat the dragon by leveling up enough, the story will still progress if the two manage to escape from it, as well. The player can receive the Accolade Dragon Slayer after defeating it.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker
A black dragon is an optional mini-boss inside Infern Mountain, but it can not be scouted.
