Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate (ドラゴンクエストXII 選ばれし運命の炎 Doragon Kuesuto Toerubu Erabareshi Unmei no Honoo)is the twelfth main Dragon Quest series game. The game was announced on May 27th, 2021, the 35th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, in a YouTube livestream. The game is planned to have a simultaneous worldwide release, though no specific release date was given. The platforms on which the game will be released have not yet been disclosed, and no gameplay footage has been released.
Very little is known about the game; however, Yuji Horii stated the game will be much "darker" and adult-themed, will put more focus on decision-making, and will have a revamped combat system, though specific details were not given. In September 2021, an exploit in NVIDIA's GeForce Now service revealed a PC release to be in development. As the franchise's music composer, and character and monster designer; Kōichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama; passed away in September, 30th, 2021 and March, 1st, 2024 respectively; Dragon Quest XII would become the final mainline series entry to involve Mr. Sugiyama and Mr. Toriyama.
