Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams (ドラゴンクエストXII 夢の彼方へ Doragon Kuesuto Toerubu Yume no Kanatahe) is the twelfth main Dragon Quest series game. The game was announced on May 27th, 2021 during the 35th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series in a YouTube livestream. The game is planned to have a simultaneous worldwide release, though no specific release date was given. The platforms on which the game will be released have not yet been disclosed, and no gameplay footage has been released. During a livestream event held on May 27th, 2026, the series' 40th anniversary, executive producer Yosuke Saito announced that development had been rebooted and the title's release would be delayed. A short preview video was then shown, revealing the game's Hero, a female companion, and a humanoid dragon character and also noting that the game's subtitle had been changed from The Flames of Fate (選ばれし運命の炎 Erabareshi Unmei no Hono) to Beyond Dreams.

Very little is known about the game; however, Yuji Horii stated the game will be much "darker" and adult-themed, will put more focus on decision-making, and will have a revamped combat system, though specific details were not given. In September 2021, an exploit in NVIDIA's GeForce Now service revealed a PC release to be in development. As the franchise's music composer, and character and monster designer; Kōichi Sugiyama and Akira Toriyama; passed away in September, 30th, 2021 and March, 1st, 2024 respectively; Dragon Quest XII would become the final mainline series entry to involve Mr. Sugiyama and Mr. Toriyama.
