Effect | Casts Fizzle when used as a tool in battle. |
The staff of antimagic is a recurring wand in the Dragon Quest franchise. It casts Fizzle when used as a tool in battle, saving the user MP. As of the tenth game, the staff has been reclassified as a two-handed wand.
Characteristics
This staff has had two distinct appearances throughout the series' history. The first and most well-known design consists of a long wooden staff topped with the image of a priest of Hell, which has a distinctive skeletal head with fangs and wears an ornate vermilion headpiece and mantle, decorated with gold and various blue gemstones. This design debuted in IV and eventually returning in X. The base of the staff ends in a hoop containing a vermilion orb and another blue gem.
The second design of the staff, which appears exclusively in VIII, is a wooden staff topped with a curved crescent-shaped design containing a small red jewel in the middle. Various red, pink, and green accents and grooves are carved all over the staff.
Appearances
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation
The staff of antimagic has an attack bonus of +20 and can be equipped by Mages, Priests, and Sages. It was introduced in the remakes. In the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color versions of the game, the staff can be purchased from a shop in the second Treasures n' Trapdoors track for 3,300 gold and sold for 2,475 gold coins. One can be found in Portoga castle, which is the only one that can be found in smartphone versions of the game.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
The staff of antimagic has an attack of +50, and has a 12.5% chance to cast Drain Magic when hitting an enemy, though this trait was not carried forward to later games. It can only be wielded by Borya, Kiryl, Maya, and Meena. It can be found in the Royal Crypt and can also be dropped by Princes of darkness.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
The staff of antimagic has an attack of +40 and can be equipped by Bianca, Nera, and the daughter. It can be found in Mount Magmageddon. A second one is equipped by the hero's daughter when she joins the party. The staff can be sold for 3,000 gold in the Super Famicom version and 2,000 gold in all other versions of the game.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation'
The staff of antimagic has an attack of +40 and a style bonus of +18. When used as an item in battle, it casts Fizzle. Carver, Ashlynn, and Amos can equip it. Battering rams drop them 1/256 of the time, while Gryphons drop them 1/128 of the time. They can be bought in Sorceria and Castle Swanstone for 6,000 gold or sold for 4,500 gold.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
The staff of antimagic has an attack of +40 and a style bonus of +18. It can be equipped by Maribel and Sir Mervyn. It can be purchased at Alltrades Abbey in the present and Spilton-on-Sea in the past for 6,800 gold and sold for 3,400 gold. The staff can also be won as a prize from the Lucky Panel at the Casinos at Buccanham and The Haven.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
The staff of antimagic has an attack of +41 and can be equipped by Jessica and Angelo. One can be found in a chest in Tryan Gully. It can be created in the Alchemy Pot by combining a Rune staff and a Wizard staff. They cannot be purchased, only sold for 3,000 gold.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Although the actual staff did not appear in this entry, an ability by the name of Antimagic can be learned by investing 9 skill points into the Wands skill. In the original Japanese version of the game, this ability shares the same name as the weapon.
