The sword is once again found in the Dragonlord's Castle, left there by the previous Hero. Unlike the armour, no one has attempted to restore the sword to its original glory, and the +40 Attack bonus means it will not be effective during the game's finale.

The sword can only be equipped by the Prince of Midenhall in the NES, while the Prince of Cannock can also equip the sword in the SFC and all ports of the remake after.

Whoever pre-ordered the Nintendo 3DS Version of the game in Japan obtained the code to download Erdrick's sword. In game, the sword must be reforged in the Alchemy Pot to reach its true potential. Ye Olde Sword of Erdrick became available to download for international players on February 24, 2017. It has an attack bonus of +20 and can be equipped by the Hero, as well as Jessica Albert and Red if they have enough skill points in Knives. After the sword has been reforged, Erdrick's sword has an Attack bonus of +120, being second to the Dragovian king sword and the most powerful sword for both Jessica and Red. Recipe: Ye Olde Sword of Erdrick + Liquid metal sword + Orichalcum
