Room preference is a mechanic in Dragon Quest Builders 2 that determines the kind of room a villager wants.

Overview[edit]

Each villager Dragon Quest Builders 2 has preferences for their assigned room: size, fanciness level, and room ambience. Each named npc has a set preference, while npcs scouted in Explorer's Shores are randomized. While animals and monsters do not show their preference residents register, they do have preferences as well.

The size, fanciness level and ambience types can be checked in the room info panel, visible by pressing the minus (-) button while inside the room.

Making 5 rooms that perfectly match the room preference of the residents who live there will unlock the Emblematic Clock recipe.

Size[edit]

There are five different room size: Tiny (♥, room size is between 4 and 15 square blocks), Small (♥♥, between 16 and 35 square blocks), Normal (♥♥♥, between 36 and 63 square blocks), Large (♥♥♥♥, between 64 and 99 square blocks), Enormous (♥♥♥♥♥, between 100 and 150 square blocks). Rooms bigger than Enormous do not get registered as rooms.

For room size, the game only counts available blocks inside the walls of the room.

Fanciness[edit]

Fanciness indicates luxury. Typically, gold items increase the fanciness indicator the most. Fanciness ranges from ♥ (simplest) to ♥♥♥♥♥ (most elegant).

Despite not having clear indicators of an item's fanciness level, elegance can be determined by how simple or complex an item is. For example, a Straw Matress is less fancy than a Rustic Bed, which in turn is less fancy than a Princess-Sized Bed.

Ambience[edit]

Ambience is determines the mood a room has, and it's affected by the blocks used to create the room's floor and walls, as well as the decorations placed within the room. There are 6 types of ambience:

  • Normal, represented with beige.
  • Cute, represented with orange.
  • Cool, represented with blue.
  • Natural, represented with green.
  • Flamboyant, represented with yellow.
  • Cheeky, represented with pink.

All six types of ambience can co-exist within a room, but the room's ambience will be determined by the predominant one. The different types appear in the room information panel represented by a pie chart.

Generally speaking, items made with dirt and stone -like Stone Steps or Stone Pots- tend to have a Normal ambience, items made with wood -like the Rustic Bed or Wooden Floor blocks- tend to have a Natural ambience, items made with metal -like Silver Brick blocks or the Shower- tend to be Cool, items and blocks used by the Children of Hargon -such as Citadel Wall blocks- tend to have a Flamboyant ambience, and "girly" items -like a Princess-Sized Bed- might have a Cute ambience. Only two items have the cheeky ambience: the Naughty Night Light and the Book of Blue Prints.

When crafting blocks and items, the player can see the item's ambience on a bubble over the item's name. Dying blocks and items adds a secondary ambience to them.

  • White and Green dye make items Natural.
  • Black and Blue dye make items Cool.
  • Purple and Yellow dye make items Flamboyant.
  • Pink and Red dye make items Cute.
