The Northwest Isle[1] is an island in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

It is the location for the Dark Ruins. As the name hints, it is northwest of the Baccarat Region. The party is able to visit the island as soon as they acquire the ship, but the ruins are inaccessible until the party has the Sun mirror after the events at Argonia.
StoryEdit
When the party first arrives at the island, they come across an adventuring party hired by Cash and Carrie from Baccarat who have hired them to avenge their father Golding's death at the hands of the evil jester Dhoulmagus. However, Dhoulmagus has sealed away the entrance to the ruins with a barrier of darkness, leaving both groups out of luck.
SpiritsEdit
The Dark Ruins contain lost souls and firespirits, long-dead members of Rhapthorne's cult who thrill at the prospect of his return.
First SpiritEdit
"Ohhhh! Ooooh! The aura of darkness is no more! The legacy of so many years, destroyed! This shrine was built in anticipation of the revival of our beloved leader, Rhapthorne. The aura of darkness was its protection from the evil heretics. The infidels have broken through the dark aura! They must be preparing to attack us...!" - The lost soul in the foyer, near the Embodiment of Bane statue.
Second SpiritEdit
"Ohhhh! Ooooh! I felt it! For the first time in what seems like an eternity, I felt the power of Rhapthorne near me! But my lack of physical form prevents me from seeing the Lord of Darkness. Could it really have been him!? Could he have returned to us?" - The firespirit just before the labyrinth
Third SpiritEdit
"Behold the mural, oh beings of flesh and blood! Behold the magnificent image of Lord Rhapthorne, locked in his titanic struggle to bring darkness to the world! Long ago, he created the World of Darkness, by filling the ground with the bodies of those who falied to obey him." - The firespirit in the same room as the Mural of Malevolence
Fourth SpiritEdit
"Woooh! Woooh! Inside lies the holy altar of darkness. The dais built in honour of our great Lord. Only those who have struck the wings of Empyrea, the hateful bird depicted on the wall, are permitted to approach the Lord of Darkness. But we spirits have lost all physical substance. I cannot hope to move the demon statues. Oh, what a cruel fate!" - The firespirit in the same room as the Unsettling Unsettled Statues
