The Demon Spear is a recurring weapon in the Dragon Quest franchise. The weapon is notable for having a chance to instantly slay any non-boss target upon contact. Despite its name, it is not a cursed item.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen remake

The Demon spear appears in the remakes of IV, and has an attack bonus of +90 along with a 1/8th chance to kill foes. Two can be found in the bonus dungeon. It may only be equipped by Ragnar and Psaro.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

The Demon spear has an attack bonus of +99 and a 1/6th chance to kill. Tuppence is the only human who may equip it, but several monster breeds can pick up the slack. It is sold in Precaria for 37,000.

  • In the SNES version, the spear is coded in the same way as the Poison needle and is thus guaranteed to always deal at least 1 damage.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

The Demon spear has an attack bonus of +99, a style bonus of +19 (+ 61 after it's been upgraded), and a 1/6th kill chance. It is found in the Dreadlair on floor two and can be sold for 18,750 gold or 21,562 gold after it's been upgraded. Amos, Carver, Nevan, Ashlynn and Terry can equip it.

  • In the SNES version the spear is bugged and cannot kill any enemy immune to instant death.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

The Demon spear can be sold for 12,500 gold, but not bought. It has an attack bonus of + 99, a style boost of +19, and a 1/6th penetration percent. Maribel, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe can equip it.

The spear is a reward for defeating Gracos V in both versions of the game, but if he is not defeated by the reappearance of Estard then it will be lost. In the 3DS version, the spear is dropped by Gracolytes at a rate of 1/128 and is also the reward for the Ocean's Overlord traveller's tablet.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

The demon spear has an attack bonus of +86 and returns to the original 1/8th rate. The Hero can equip it. It can be sold for 12,500 gold, but not bought. Its alchemy recipe is Battle fork + Poison needle + Devil's tail.

A little known, considerably cruel combo can be pulled off by using the Hero's Clean Sweep skill, as the instant death effect is checked for all enemies struck.

Dragon Quest Heroes

Kiryl's attack and defence are increased by +70 and +15 respectively when the demon spear is equipped, and the instant death chance is 2%. This sounds minuscule, but each strike made by the priest has a chance to trigger the effect.

Dragon Quest Heroes II

The spear increases attack by +85, no longer has a defence bonus, and has a 1% critical hit chance per strike.
