Hero talking to a townsperson.

A Non-Player Character (NPC) is a general gaming term for any non-player controlled character. In Dragon Quest, these characters range from townspeople who do nothing more than talk to the player, to party members which are completely controlled by the computer. In many cases, completing game scenarios and quests revolves around finding specific NPCs who can aid the player in some way.

Trivia

  • In the NES Version of Dragon Quest IV and Super Famicom Version of Dragon Quest V, NPCs Healie, Laurel, Orifiela, Honey and Pankraz were completely uncontrollable. In all remakes of the games, Healing Spells known by the characters can be used manually out of battle.
