Effect | Reduces fire & ice damage |
The Ogre shield is a recurring shield in the Dragon Quest series, which debuted in Dragon Quest V. It is typically a mid to high-level shield and frequently offers protection to the wearer against fire and ice breath. While certain hardware limitations force the ogre shield to have its polygon model rendered at around the same size as the other shields in a given title, it is consistently noted as being utterly massive via in-game menu descriptions and is thus restricted to only the most physically powerful characters.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit]
The ogre shield appears in the 16-bit remake and has a defence bonus of +60, can be purchased in Rimuldar for 25,000 gold and sold for 18,750 gold. It can only be equipped by the Hero and Warriors and is the second strongest shield in the game. Unfortunately, the shield offers no breath protection in this installment.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
Appearing exclusively in smartphone versions of the game, the ogre shield has a defence bonus of +50, cuts breath damage by 10, and can only be equipped by the Hero, Ragnar, and Psaro. It was a limited-time item that could be obtained by redeeming points from the Dragon Quest Portal app that was exclusive for Japanese players and could only be acquired from the start of Chapter 5.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The ogre shield has a defence bonus of +48 and cuts breath damage by 10. It can be found in Mt. Zugzwang, can be dropped by the Bilhaw at a rate of 1/32, and can be sold for 9,900 gold (14,850 gold in the original Super Famicom version). The shield can be equipped by the Hero, Sancho, and various monster companions.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
The ogre shield has a base defence bonus of +48 and cuts breath damage by 10, but also reduces style by 10. It can be purchased in Despairia for 20,000, and can be equipped by Carver, Amos, Lizzie, Terry, and Goowain. It features the same parameters as in V, but can be upgraded to +60 defence and +50 style at the Fashion Forge for 16,000 gold. If equipped with the Gigant armour when being ranked for the Best-Dressed Contest, they gain a +15 bonus to style.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The ogre shield has a defence bonus of +45, cuts breath damage by 20, but also reduces style by 10. It can be equipped by Kiefer and Ruff, can only be dropped from Testudogres at the frustratingly low rate of 1/256, and can be sold for 14,000 gold. It loses its coordination bonus with the gigant armour as Ruff is not capable of equipping both pieces of equipment.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]

The ogre shield has a defence bonus of +45, cuts breath damage by 10, and can only be equipped by Hero and Yangus. It can be found in a treasure chest in the desert region near Arcadia, which can only be accessed by flying.
