The Flail of destruction, known as the Iron ball of destruction in Japanese, is a recurring weapon in the Dragon Quest series which first appeared in Dragon Quest V as a weapon found in its post-game dungeon. It is often one of the strongest weapons, if not the strongest itself, in the game and can attack all enemies. It was originally classified as a whip, but later in the series, flails became their own separate weapon type.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation Remakes[edit]
The weapon is known as the Destructiball in the smartphone and Nintendo Switch version of III, having an attack bonus of +135 and being able to target all enemies in battle. It can be equipped by the Hero, Warriors, Martial Artists, Thieves, and Sages. One can be found in the bonus dungeon, while others can be obtained from the fifth Pachisi track at Zipangu. In the smartphone and Nintendo Switch versions, there is only one available in the game.
Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
In the remakes, the Flail of destruction has an attack bonus of +115, and hits all enemies. It can only be wielded by Ragnar and Torneko. They can be purchased in the final stage of Pioneer Town.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The Flail of destruction has an attack bonus of +125. It can be found in Estark's Labyrinth, and can be purchased on the Stark Raving Mad T'N'T board's shop for 50,000 gold. The Hero, Sancho, and numerous monster companions can equip it. It can be sold for either 37,500 Gold Coins in the original or 25,000 Gold in the remakes.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
The Flail of destruction has an attack bonus of +125 and a style bonus of +26, but it can be upgraded to have a style bonus of +68. Carver, Amos, Terry, Lizzie, and Goowain can equip it. Mechalomaniacs have a 1⁄4096 chance of dropping one. They can be purchased in the Greedmore Valley casino for 300,000 tokens. It cannot be sold.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The Flail of destruction has an attack bonus of +125 and a style bonus of +26. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Ruff, and Aishe and can be purchased from the Grand Slum immigrant town's or the final stage of The Haven's casino for 300,000 tokens (350,000 in the 3DS version). It can be sold for 10,000 Gold Coins.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
The Flail of destruction has an attack bonus of +125 and can only be equipped by Yangus. It is obtained from Princess Minnie after delivering her 110 mini medals (121 in the 3DS remake). Unlike other weapons, there are no skills associated with flails. It can be sold for 22,250 gold, but it is not recommended to do so as there is only one in the game.
Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End[edit]
The Flail of Destruction appears as one of the abilities Torneko can use in combat. It costs 13 MP and covers a wide arc over his head before slamming into the ground.
Dragon Quest of the Stars[edit]
Introduced in the second part of the Dragon Quest V event alongside the Princess Attire, the Flail of destruction is a whip obtainable via gacha banners. It's main skill is Destruction Derby, a non-elemental combo attack that hits all enemies twice with a 100% potency hit, and then hits a random enemy once with a 250% potency attack.
It eventually received Alchemy, allowing it to turn into the Royal Flail of Destruction, a more powerful version that added a second main skill: Drop the Ball.
Dragon Quest Tact[edit]
The Flail of destruction is an S-rank axe that can be acquired as part of the limited Dragon Quest IV event by defeating Psaro the Manslayer on his peak on Hard mode. It can also be obtained by clearing floor 15 of the 1st Anniversary Tower. It has an ATK bonus of +40 and has three slots for Alchemy Effects.
