Development

On April 2009, there was a trademark filed by Square Enix. The video game was developed by Intelligent Systems as part of a collaboration between Nintendo and Square Enix for Intelligent Systems to design six video games for Square Enix on the DSiWare service. The video game Dragon Wars has been supervised by Yūji Horii like any other Dragon Quest video game that has been released. Akira Toriyama was as usual the art designer of the video game and Kōichi Sugiyama was the composer. Producer Taichi Inuzuka states that has long been his hope to create simulation with Dragon Quest. The developers wanted to create a game to convey the fun of simulation titles for Nintendo which includes Wars and Fire Emblem two popular games that has been released by Nintendo.

Gameplay

The Dragon Quest Wars video games allows each player battle one another with four monster units. In total four players can battle each other on a four-sided battlefield made up a square. The battles in the game are limited to five to ten turns which players move their units by touching and dragging them using the DS stylus. Giving commands to your units is issues also by touching and dragging them onto a unit from the bottom of the screen which there are up to four commands in colour: Red (physical attacks), Green (recovery), Blue (defence), and Yellow (magic). Each monster from each four players unit has between one and three hearts which these hearts deplete as monsters are attacked. When the hearts will reach 0, the monster walks off the field. Also a player can win a battle either when all of his enemy units has been defeated or if their units crosses into an enemy's base. The Dragon Quest Wars also features "survival matches", which require the player to set all of their moves within a time limit before the battle begins.
