Fact-checking resources

Salutations! Thanks for all your help with VII's new information, it's been a real sore spot for the site for years and I'm glad someone decided to pitch in! These sites here are the ones I use to double check myself when I don't feel like spelunking through countless gamefaqs boards. Auto translate can be a little rough, but once you get the hang of things its easy to discern the information. Once again thanks a ton for your help!

General information

http://wikiwiki.jp/dqdic3rd/ Character ages, nicknames, how often monsters appear, developer quotes, etc. Only thing they lack are pictures.

Hard data

http://www7b.biglobe.ne.jp/~dqwiz/ The one most regarded by the gamefaqs crowd. Its ceased updates as of VII's remake, but covers monster resistances, stats, equipment price, you name it.

https://www.d-navi.info/ Absolutely the best resource for IX's data, providing all the calculations for skills and spells, as well as hidden equipment stats.

http://dq-gh.com/ Not quite as detailed as Navi, but they do provide images for most games, and it pays to have additional sources

Happy New Year!

2016 has been a rollercoaster of a year for just about everyone on the planet, but at least the wiki is doing fine! Thanks for helping out with all you've done, and here's to a freshly wrapped new year! (Follower of Light (talk) 20:07, 31 December 2016 (CST))

Image problem?

I have not been uploading anything anymore, since when I try to upload a new image, I am automatically signed out. I can't figure out how to remain signed in, either. Also, my "Dragon Quest News" feed does not show up on the main page. Okay, apparently I CAN upload images, so long as the images are brand-new, not uploading over a pre-existing image (which, strangely enough, I've always been able to do until now). If I load up a page with an existing image, I am automatically signed out and am of course not given permission to upload anything. Weird, huh?

User:Follower of Light thought maybe I recently installed a script blocking add on or something to my browser and forgot to allow certain scripts. Follower of Light then also tried uploading a brand new image and was promptly booted out. When Follower of Light tried to log back in he was told he was already signed in, and that he was not accepting cookies from the site. The newsfeed is also down for him. Are you aware of this problem? - icysugarspike (talk) 13:26, 4 February 2017 (CST)
I've been noticing the same thing! I don't know why it does that.. I am able to upload, but as soon as the image gets uploaded, it "signs you out". But as soon as you go to another page, it is back to normal. The feed is not showing up for me either on the front page. Aphelion (talk) 13:30, 4 February 2017 (CST)
Well, until this gets to the attention of Zenithian or FlyingRagnar (I wrote to them), I'm hanging up my hat. :( - 09:01, 5 February 2017 (CST)
I'm also experiencing this problem. Until it is fixed by an admin, a temporary fix is to replace every "." in the filename with "%2E".
Example
Instead of:
http://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQIV_Pocus_Poppet.png
Use:
http://dragon-quest.org/wiki/File:DQIV_Pocus_Poppet%2Epng
It seems that using this method changes to images are not visible instantly but do go through. Hope this helps :) TheCodingGamer (talk) 19:36, 5 February 2017 (CST)
Taking this moment to thank you for uploading those PS1 DQIV character images. I know how rare they are, probably never having been uploaded before in a state where we can really appreciate them. The Dragon Quest image collection is nearing completion, thanks to you and all of us. Have a great day (you made mine!) and keep those Toriyamasterpieces coming! - icysugarspike (talk) 08:30, 23 February 2017 (CST)
It's possible it could be an imitator, but I tend to think they are by Toriyama himself, just with the original drawing fleshed out the rest of the way by computer (someone in the SE art department, etc.). Anyway you slice it, great contributions! - icysugarspike (talk) 13:34, 23 February 2017 (CST)
I was told these are part of that set's release. If you have these any larger, it would be much appreciated! :)

DQIV low quality.png - icy 14:56, 23 February 2017 (CST)

I've checked, and it seems all we are missing are the Borya and Hero/Heroine poses. If they exist and/or time permits, of course. - icysugarspike (talk) 16:37, 24 February 2017 (CST)
Bravissimo, you are a real gem!!! :) - icysugarspike (talk) 15:45, 25 February 2017 (CST)

Site Feedback

Hey there, just wanted to say thanks for contributing so much to the wiki over the years. I'm sure you are probably aware it has been migrated to a new host. Everything should be up and working great at this point. Please let me know if you find things that are broken or could use attention. We are on a much better host now, so hopefully a lot of past problems are no longer an issue. --FlyingRagnar (talk) 00:51, 1 October 2017 (EDT)

Posted this on FoL's talk page

While doing recent editing I found in List of locations in Dragon Quest II a claim that Dirkandor was founded by Robbin' 'Ood from III. Or as the article suggested, Kandar. Fellow GameFAQs poster behindtheword seems doubtful and my own searching, best I could find is assumption that the bolded segment of Dirkandor is close to RH's old localization name as an indicator. You hear of the claim previously Antiyonder (talk) 23:29, 30 January 2022 (EST)

Possible it could be an official product being the source, but I have heard of misinformation that lacked Canon sources before like debates on a temporary party member being the Hero of IV's mother or Bianca having a major tragic life in the original version of V if she isn't married. Antiyonder (talk) 08:34, 31 January 2022 (EST)

Quake and Stomp

So when it comes to articles tied to the games from the Enix, I'd say for the most part a lot has been update with the Square Enix localization. VII heavy articles is still being worked on. That said, Quake which is used by Weighvern and it's family has no article, at least I don't know. Does Stomp sound like it is the same move? Antiyonder (talk) 08:34, 31 January 2022 (EST)

Yup! As far as I can tell, they are the same move. I've been meaning to get back to finishing up VII's bestiary entries but gotten a bit distracted adding a lot of the Tact info lately. Aphelion (talk) 12:40, 31 January 2022 (EST)
I'll be doing some of that likely just the same, but thanks for confirmation. I'll probably save a list of further entries until I've gone through other VII articles (some of the Monsters sections having the same issue) and ask about them rather than doing it constant, but in the mean time, would Venom Mist (By Malign vine for example) be what was originally Venom Strike? Antiyonder (talk) 19:16, 31 January 2022 (EST)
It's been ages since I've played the PS1 version of VII, but it looks like Venom Mist was known as PoisonFog in the original translation. Usually when it comes to names like that I'm not 100% sure on, I like to check RPGClassic's section for VII or RPG Legion since they have a pretty good resource for double-checking names and such from the Enix translation. Aphelion (talk) 19:27, 31 January 2022 (EST)

Dread dragon

Want to avoid linking incase the name merits a change, but the Red dragon from DQ, where does the name Dread dragon come from? Played Dragon Quest on cell phone and it is called Red dragon. Antiyonder (talk) 14:42, 20 September 2022 (EDT)

It seems like they started using Dread dragon in the original Heroes game and it's stuck with most games since that's what they've used in XI, Builders 2, and Tact. Nice catch/observation! I wouldn't have noticed it myself. I just looked up some footage of the Switch version of I and I noticed they still used the name Red dragon. Aphelion (talk) 14:49, 20 September 2022 (EDT)

Question

So I've been going back and forth on whether I would make Templates for each Seven Sages for VIII, but before I make a final decision, did you have immediate or later plans to make an article per Sage? If yes then such probably won't be needed. Antiyonder (talk) 18:28, 6 February 2022 (EST)

I don't know if there's even enough info in the game for the original sages, but I would say maybe individual pages for the modern incarnations like Golding, David, Alistair, etc. Aphelion (talk) 18:41, 6 February 2022 (EST)
Well someone already took car of David, but then as far as the originals well Template it is then. And yeah can't believe we didn't notice the wrong title in the Tower of Alexandra. Even checked on my Phone version of the game to see the spelling. Antiyonder (talk) 21:19, 6 February 2022 (EST)
No worries! It's definitely one of those things I would never have noticed if I hadn't been checking and looking at gameplay footage on Youtube. It's been literal years since I played through VIII last completely, not since the 3DS version was brand new. Aphelion (talk) 22:20, 6 February 2022 (EST)

And on the subject of different perspectives and noticing what others don't: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/189709-dragon-quest-xi-s-echoes-of-an-elusive-age-definitive/79801749

Some of what I list personally you might have noticed on the wiki, but yeah some additions or change between versions are heavily noticed like the Chapter 6 and the 9th Chosen One (Yeah as the games aren't the most well known in the west I am trying to work out ways to be informative while obscuring some details), added Bride and being able to have a 4 person party in V or varying forms of Reaper's Peak in VI.

Or in the case of IV and VI's Cell phone version reinstated Party Chat and more generous Level Caps for Vocation training.

But some noted details overlooked:

So the removed recruitable monsters for VI is noted rightfully since it is a big deal as with the removed features that were added from the SFC and GBC port of III (which still I do play from time to time on my phone) on both Cell phone or Switch port.

But a noted bit of deletion is Marcello giving you the Map in VIII, and while I definitely like Red's Yangus impersonation, those who only play the 3DS port might miss out on what the two have been doing profession wise unless they played or watched the other ports.

However and I am going to list them soon, is a real slip up in III (again Mobile and Switch). Yeah some may note the removal of the ability to attack your allies and even curing Confusion through that. It also means no using Heal spells to wound Zoma.

Yet an NPC in the Great Pit of Giaga which in a pic I uploaded still tells you to slap sense into your confused ally:-(.

So any details from original to remake to later remakes you didn't see in my or any of the posts? Antiyonder (talk) 04:36, 11 February 2022 (EST)

The ones that I can think of are mostly from III and VII. I've actually never played the NES version of III or IV, at least not extensively. A lot of the ones I can think of have been noted on here, just little things here and there like whips being a single-target weapon in the NES versions of III and IV. Most of my frame of reference for III is playing the Game Boy Color version. There's probably some other differences that I can think of from the PS1 version of VII. It's been a little while since I've had a chance to play it. Aphelion (talk) 14:45, 11 February 2022 (EST)

Set up the Kingdom of Trodain article best I could. Given how the buttons show up on the phone I don't think I'll be able to keep the open pic consistent with how you do so (Showing the Hero overlooking the area). So if you can manage a pic, that would be nice, thanks. Antiyonder (talk) 22:41, 14 February 2022 (EST)

Looks good so far! I'll see what I can find. Honestly, I was going with those because that was what I could find online. I've been looking at playthroughs online to get any screenshots that might be needed when possible. Is there any way to do a first-person mode on the mobile version of 8? Aphelion (talk) 16:16, 15 February 2022 (EST)
Sure. I have a pic taken for another purpose, but it could work for the article head. So just cause I could use a second opinion, how do the location pics look so far. Mostly have things uploaded from Farebury to the Ruined Abbey, especially places/things permanently changed by the game's end like the Southern Checkpoint in the Farebury Region before Dhoulmagus damaged it. Antiyonder (talk) 16:23, 15 February 2022 (EST)

Something I can use some help on is regarding chests on the Overworld in VIII. For right now some in the Maella Region and the Kingdom of Ascantha. Adding as I go along on my playthrough, but sometimes I'm not good at articulating the location unless it's close by something notable.

Like the ones in Maella Region with the Seed of wisdom which best I can describe is by the river from which across is the path to the Ruined Abbey. And not too far from that chest is one with the Seed of strength. Think you could provide the directions on the articles? Antiyonder (talk) 22:57, 20 February 2022 (EST)

I'll see what I can do! I came across a brilliant site a while back that has maps for all the overworld treasure chests recently. Not sure if you needed another resource, but it's very helpful for reference. Aphelion (talk) 23:40, 20 February 2022 (EST)
http://wolfgangarchive.com/dq-web/index.html
Thanks, but I know how to find them myself well via the map I use from Realm of Darkness which I added to the World of Light gallery. What I need help with is say in the Maella Region article. I found the two chests with a stat boosting seed, but I could use your help in describing the location to anyone reading the article. A clear, but simple direction. Antiyonder (talk) 23:46, 20 February 2022 (EST)
Working slowly on the Kingdom of Argonia. In the meantime I have obtained and listened all treasures found in the Kingdom of Ascantha, the Pickham Region and the Kingdom of Trodain. So if you could do the same interms of specifying the locations it would be appreciated thanks. There is one I added to the Baccarat Region regarding a Prayer ring. It seems like it's in the Kingdom of Argonia, but autosave restarting confirms it in Baccarat Region. It's in the area closeby Le Club Puff-Puff. Antiyonder (talk) 06:20, 7 March 2022 (EST)
I can get to that right now. So I'm looking at some videos of gameplay and noticing that there are some extra treasures in the 3DS version, it seems to be mostly extra mini medals that were added, but gonna have to make a note of it from now on. I found one treasure chest in the Argonia region that has a mini medal instead of a seed of agility. Also it turns out that being on the western side of the river near Le Cluff Puff-Puff puts you in the Baccarat region, but being on the right side is considered Eastern Argonia. Just double-checked that with a quicksave on the 3DS. Aphelion (talk) 14:58, 7 March 2022 (EST)
So, when you make an article for an alchemy recipes, just send a mention to my talk page if you think of it as I am accommodating such by changing the templates to a proper link (Or in the case of Iron nails, Iron nail). Thanks Antiyonder (talk) 10:21, 10 November 2022 (EST)
Sure thing! That sounds good to me. I've been slowly going through and working on those lately and making sure they don't redirect to the ingredients list from IX. Aphelion (talk) 14:23, 10 November 2022 (EST)
Also thinking about it, I might retitled the page Iron nail cause it's easier to just have a singular name as the article title and to and an s like with Iron nails. Antiyonder (talk) 22:06, 10 November 2022 (EST)

Redirects, disambigs and spoilers

So I learned how to find certain edits, thus I took care of recent and old articles with the redirects removed.

And now I'm going to be slowly seeing to it that all links to Maya Mahabala are redirect free. I mean it's a longtime goal for any redirects, but I was thinking of making Maya a disambig. You know, since that is Mia's Japanese name.

Started here in List of spells in Dragon Quest IV, which I took the initiative, but wanted to ask if you think obscuring a certain spoiler on it was intrusive or done well.

I mean besides it being a rare occasion in which a big bad becomes a playable party member, I tend to take the side of caution since Dragon Quest well doesn't have the same familiarity compared to Pokémon and Final Fantasy. As such keeping mum when possible arguably does make more of a difference.

Your take? Antiyonder (talk) 03:51, 2 December 2022 (EST)

To be honest, I am not so sure about making a disambiguation page for Maya. I think it could make things needlessly complicated. I think at the very least, maybe we could have a note on both Maya and Mia's pages about their similar names. As far as the secret party member in IV, it's hard to say. It's definitely a complicated issue since that character won't join the party until practically the very end of the game. Aphelion (talk) 19:32, 2 December 2022 (EST)
