Moonwort bulb is a recurring curative item in the Dragon Quest series. It is used to alleviate the paralysis status effect and, in VII and VIII, slumber.

Appearances

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

Moonwort bulbs are very vital in their first appearance, as the paralysis status does not remedy itself during battle and if the whole party is paralysed, it counts as a wipe out. It can be purchased from many shops for 30 gold each starting from Romaria and sold for 22 gold. Some bulbs can be found in Romaria, Norvik, and the Phantom Ship, as well as being dropped by Scornets, Dread admirals, and Man o' wars.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Moonwort bulbs can be purchased from many shops for 30 gold each starting from the Desert Bazaar and sold for 22 gold. The spell Tingle has been modified to affect all party members, diminishing the importance of the plant slightly. However, as only Meena will learn the spell, most players keep a few in stock for when she is incapacitated or not in the party. Moonwort bulbs can be dropped by Paralyslicers, Humbabas, Hellspawns, Pit vipers, Man o' wars, and Mangler fishes.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

Moonwort bulbs can be purchased from item shops for 30 gold each in Coburg, Fortuna, Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, Mostroferrato, Stockenbarrel, and Helmunaptra and sold for 15 gold. The bulbs can also be dropped by Wormbats, Deadcurions, Fire-eaters, and Man o' wars. Several monster companions will learn Tingle, further reducing the importance of the plant. However, due to the random nature of taming it is still advised to have a bushel on hand for safety's sake. Furthermore, the accuracy of the enemy version of Burning Breath has risen significantly in the DS and mobile device versions of the game, thus necessitating cultivation for allies who aren't outright immune to being paralysed.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

Moonwort bulbs can be purchased from various item shops throughout the world starting from Haggleton for 30 gold coins each and sold for 22 gold. Two bulbs can be found in Howsworth and Pescado. The bulbs can also be dropped by Slumbering rams, Biguanas, Venom wasps, Aristobats, Killer moths, and Man o' wars. In this game, paralysis has been modified to wear off in battle after a number of turns, as with bedazzlement and sleep, making moonwort bulbs largely unnecessary. Additionally, any character can learn Tingle after reaching rank 4 in the Priest vocation.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Moonwort bulbs have been cross-pollinated extensively to breed a more useful root, curing a single ally from sleep as well as paralysis. The bulbs are sold in item shops throughout the world starting from L'Arca for 30 gold coins each and sold for 15 gold. Some bulbs can be found in the Hardlypool Tunnel, the Sunken Citadel in the past, and the Mountaintop Church in the past, as well. Moonwort bulbs can also be received as prizes from the Lucky Panel at the Casino. The bulbs can be dropped by Slaying mantises, Compos mantises, along with Dark skeletons and Dread admirals in the Nintendo 3DS version.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Moonwort bulbs can be purchased from Ascantha, Baccarat, Savella Cathedral, the Holy Isle of Neos, the Peddler's Tent, Argonia, and Arcadia for 30 gold coins and sold for 15 gold. In this game, the moonwort bulb was improved even further, now targeting everyone in the party. Some bulbs can be found in Alexandria, the Tower of Alexandra, and the Holy Isle of Neos. The bulbs can be dropped by Lips, Bubble slimes, Drackymas, Night sneakers, Venom wasps, Jabs, Soulspawns, Dark skeletons, Man o' wars, and Corpse corporals.

The moonwort bulb's original translation "full moon herb" suggests that the plant only flourishes in moonlight, explaining the plant's selenite shape.
