The Rain Shrine is a shrine located to the west of the village of Kol in Alefgard during the time of the original Dragon Quest.

It is preceded by the Tower of Rubiss in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

Synopsis

At some time between the events of Dragon Quest III (which chronologically came first) and Dragon Quest, the tower west of Kol was converted into the shrine. No details are ever provided regarding this conversion.

Dragon Quest

The shrine is home to a man guarding the Staff of Rain. By bringing the Lyre of Ire to the man, the Hero may exchange it for the staff. In the original Famicom artwork, it is depicted as run-down and in ruins.

Dragon Quest I HD-2D Remake

The shrine's tower has been upgraded into a full-blown tower dungeon, with the upper floors being accessible once the Hero has the Ultimate key received from Spiketail. The tower music from Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation plays inside it.

Monsters

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line

As is the case of many Alefgard locations, the shrine does not appear on the world map in Dragon Quest II.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake

The Shrine of Rain reappears in the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest II. The Dragonlord's great-great-grandson tells the Luminaries that the fairies in the Shrine of Rain are in trouble. They make their way up to the top, where they come to the fairies' rescue. In return, they are given the Echo Flute to find the 5 Sigils.

Though Dragon Quest II has its own tower theme, the one from Dragon Quest III plays again inside the shrine.
