The poison moth knife is a recurring knife in the Dragon Quest series. Of unusually elaborate design for a dagger, it can induce paralysis on strike in all appearances with a rate of 1/6th to 1/8th, depending on the title.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]
The poison moth knife has an Attack bonus of +24 and a 1⁄8 chance of paralyzing its target. It can be wielded by Borya, Torneko Taloon, Maya & Meena. Laurel has one among his equipment.
It can be purchased for 750 gold coins, and sold for 562. Tessie will sell it at Torneko's shop for 1,125.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit]
The poison moth knife has an attack bonus of +24 and paralyses at a rate of 1/8. It can be purchased in Stockenbarrel for 900 gold.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit]
The poison moth knife may be equipped by Milly, Ashlynn, Nevan, Goowain, and the slime buddies. It has an attack bonus of +24, and a style bonus of +13. It is dropped by Giant moths, appropriately enough, and the paralysis effect will trigger with normal attacks as well as dragon slash, double-edged slash, flame slash, frenzy, gust slash, hatchet man, kacrackle slash, lightning slash, mercurial thrust, metal slash, multifists, multislash, & undead undoer 1/6th of the time before a monster's resistance applies.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past[edit]
The poison moth knife has an attack bonus of +23, a style bonus of +13, and the paralysis rate and triggering skills remain the same as in VI. It can be equipped by Maribel and Sir Mervyn. One is given to the party after the events at Faraday in the past and another can be found at the Roamers encampment. It cannot be purchased from any shop, but they can be sold for 475 gold. Poison moth knives can also be won as prizes from the Lucky Panel at the Casino.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King[edit]
The poison moth knife has an attack bonus of +29. It can only be equipped by Jessica or Red and will paralyse foes 1/8th of the time. This effect will not trigger on if her knife skills are used. It can be purchased in Pickham for 950 gold.
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit]
The Poison Moth Knife has expanded into a alchemical family of blades, each carrying a 1/8th chance to stun on normal attacks. Additionally, they will also deal a base +10% damage to bugs.

The poison moth knife may be alchemized by combining a Divine Dagger with two helpings of Coagulant and one spot of Manky Mud, making for an easy upgrade. The weapon can be further refined into the Batterfly knife by combining it with three helpings of Coagulant and three Butterfly wings.
