The scale shield was added in the 1996 remake. It has a defense bonus of +12, and can be equipped by the Hero, warriors, priests, merchants, gadabouts, thieves & sages. It can be purchased for 600 gold coins, and sold for 450.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
The scale shield has a defense bonus of +7, and can be equipped by all characters except for Alena & Maya. Hank Hoffman Jr. & Oojam have it among their equipment. It can be purchased for 180 gold coins and sold for 135. Tessie will sell this at Torneko's shop for 270.
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
The scale shield has a defense bonus of +7. They can be bought for 180 gold in Roundbeck, Fortuna, Lodestar Harbour, Zoomingale, and Gotha. The Hero, Bianca, Nera, Son, Daughter, Harry, Sancho, and Tuppence can equip it.
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Scale shields have a defense bonus of +7 and a style bonus of +4. The Hero, Carver, Amos, Terry, Nevan, and Goowain can equip them. Gum shields and Wayward armours have a 1/64 chance of dropping a scale shield. They can be sold for 135 gold and bought for 180 gold in Haggleton, Somnia, and Port Haven.
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +7 and a style bonus of +4. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe and is sold in both versions of Emberdale for 180 gold.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
The scale shield has a defence bonus of +7. All characters can equip this shield. They can be bought in Alexandria, Port Prospect, and Peregrin Quay for 180 gold as well as sold for 90 gold. headhunters, wild boarfish, and yabbies drop them rarely. Its alchemy recipe is leather shield + dragon scale.
