Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake

This shrine is where Rubiss has set Herself into an immaterial state to slumber so that She cannot be assailed by the forces of darkness as she was in Dragon Quest III. This is for the safety of all Alefgard as much as Her own, as Her creation is tied to Her own life force and Her death will spell disaster. The protection the shrine offers is triple-fold: its location in the abyss is complimented by a holy aura that prevents the common sea monsters from even approaching it. Secondly the interior of the shrine is protected by a magic barrier that will not open unless all five of the scattered sigils are present, and is so thoroughly efficient that not even the towering Atlas can force his way through. Finally, Rubiss Herself will not materialize into a corporeal form unless awoken by the music of the faerie flute.

The Scions of Erdrick enter the shrine after collecting the five sigils, which Rubiss Herself hid away throughout Her creation, and utilizing the fully-powered Lorelei's harp to submerge into the dark depths. Shortly after arriving the sigils will activate and open the barrier for them, only for Atlas to arrive on the scene; the brute sarcastically thanks the children for guiding him to the shrine and gives them the chance to flee with their lives. The four will hear none of it and stand up to the boorish cyclops, forcing him to vacate while blaming his loss on the shrine being too crampt for him to fight properly.

Having defended the shrine, the Scions continue on to its center and observe a glistening, technicolour orb of unknown liquid hovering above a broken down ring platform. The Princess of Moonbrooke players the faerie flute, and the ring transforms into proper structure set with five columns topped with flaming braziers representing the sigils. This platform is surrounded by a larger platform with a ring of water and plants, with a spiraling staircase ascending above, recreating the shrine's original design from the older versions of the title. This structure ascends above the waves and is terminates into five towering pillars representing emblazoned with the marks of the sigils, allowing for quicker access from the overworld.

The Goddess awakens from Her slumber and materializes before the children, greeting them with a polite courtesy. She tells the group that She watched over their journey through Her dreams and bequeaths them a holy artefact that will guide them through Hargon's deceptions. Rubiss then takes a slightly sterner tone and has the children promise Her that none of them will lay down their lives to see their mission through. Satisfied with their pledge, Rubiss reflects on how their bloodline has stood against the darkness time and time again, and asks them to save Her world. With that, the mother of creation declares She is always watching over the children and dematerializes before them in a flash of light.

Trivia

  • The Japanese script for older versions of the game referred to the shrine as the seirei no hokora, the same name used for the Shrine of the Spirit in Japanese. As that shrine also appears in the HD version of the game, the Shrine of Rubiss was given a new name to avoid confusion.
