Melinda is a mermaid encountered in Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake who becomes an ally of the Scions of Erdrick once the children help her clear up a misunderstanding regarding a certain sailor.
Appearance and Personality[edit]
Melinda has neck-length pink hair that curves upwards at the ends and wears a simple sky blue bra along with a darker blue sash around her waist. In her hair is a small conch shell accessory.
Like all mermaids Melinda speaks in rhyme for most of her dialogue. Melinda is notably less suspicious of humans than most mermaids, as seen when she escorts the lost fishermen of Zahan back to their island home after their boat is damaged and develops an intense crush on Sylvester while doing so, as well as insisting on greeting the Scions to thank them when they snuff out the monsters hunting her and Elaine. Beyond this Melinda has demonstrated a remarkably strong selfless streak, staying behind to search for Elaine during the raid on Mersea when the two become separated in addition to helping the fishermen as mentioned above, as well as politely breaking all contact with Sylvester after she learns that he has a wife and child which he neglected to mention. This care for the well-being of others before herself earned Melinda much praise from the Princess of Moonbrooke, which cases her no shortage of embarrassment.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]
Melinda is first encountered at Gaggle Rock, a barren stone outcropping in the open ocean that is a popular gathering spot for mermaids. She and her friend Elaine are hiding from the school of madder mermen that ambush the player upon reaching Gaggle Rock, and introduce themselves once the monsters have been eliminated. Melinda explains that the madder mermen were closing in on a Zahan fishing vessel when it became damaged, with she and Elaine rushing in to save them before it was too late. The pair of mermaids then spent time nursing the fishermen back to health while they repaired their boat, with Melinda becoming infatuated with Sylvester during this time. Once the boat was repaired she and Elaine swam along side it as the fishermen sailed back to Zahan to ensure every one of them made it back safely. This escort voyage coincidentally took place just as the Scions of Erdrick departed from Zahan themselves after being asked by Sylvester's Wife to search for her missing husband, and when the young heroes reached Gaggle Rock the mariners were back home already.
The Princess of Moonbrooke thanks the duo for saving the fishermen and laments that she doesn't know of a way to repay them, with Melinda assuring her not to worry as Sylvester had already planned to. The Prince of Cannock then lets it slip that Sylvester has a wife and son, wondering aloud if they will accompany him when the reward is delivered. This news crushes Melinda but she puts on a brave face, now insisting that there is no need for a reward under the flimsy excuse of humans and mermaids valuing possessions that are too different in nature. She then asks the Scions to return to Zahan and inform Sylvester that he shouldn't trouble himself with taking a voyage just for her sake, and to thank him for his consideration.
The Scions return to Gaggle Rock to find Melinda and Elaine sunning themselves on the stones, explaining that Sylvester was adamant that the pair receive a reward for saving his life and that of ther other fishermen. To this end he had the young heroes retrieve the pearl earring stored in the Shipwright's Shrine and take it to Gaggle Rock, explaining that according to Zahan legend it once belonged to a mermaid. When the Scions deliver the bauble Melinda is not quite sure what to make of it, but is reminded that the Queen of the Mermaids wore one like it long ago. With the gift delivered the Princess of Moonbrooke then apologizes on behalf of the group, stating they did not mean to cause Melinda such grief and that the Princess respects her for putting others before herself. The praise gets to Melinda and she begins sobbing openly from the roaring tide of emotions she has been trying to bottle up, which causes a chain reaction where Elaine, the Princess of Moonbrooke, and the Princess of Cannock join in while the boys look on, mystified.
Melinda gets the chance to pay the Scions of Erdrick back for acting as her go-between when they return to Gaggle Rock, desperate for help in locating the faerie trumpet. The situation is that the Over-Seer has contacted the quartet out of fear that the Faerie Palace might be under attack, and the only way for humans to enter the building is by using the faerie trumpet held by the Queen of the Mermaids for safe keeping. Sensing the urgency of the situation Melinda swims off after only a short debriefing and yanks the trumpet after seeing the Queen was absent, recognizing that time was of the essence. When the Princess of Moonbrooke worries Melinda will get in trouble for the theft, Elaine chimes in and assures her it isn't the first time the two have been told off and it won't be the last.
The next encounter with Melinda is a much less pleasant one; the Scions of Erdrick are informed that the mermaid kingdom of Mersea is under attack as well. With help from Elaine and Lorelei's harp, the group's boat sails beneath the waves and reaches the kingdom, finding not a soul around until Melinda swims out from the shadows. She explains that when Mariella's forces attacked the Queen gave the order for the mermaids to flee to their distant stronghold, but when she noticed Elaine was missing she returned to Mersea to look for her bestie. As it turns out Elain had panicked so hard that she bolted for Gaggle Rock instead of the stronghold. Reunited, Melinda and Elaine remain in Mersea for the rest of the game and proudly introduce their heroic friends to the rest of the mermaids once Mariella is driven out.
In the credits roll of the game's true ending Melinda and Elaine accompany the Queen of the mermaids to Gaggle Rock to meet with the King of Midenhall, helping establish formal relations between the two races.
Trivia[edit]
- As the lifespan of mermaids is never commented on and Melinda remembers the Queen wearing the pearl earring that she gave away many decades prior to the game, it is possible that Melinda is much older than she looks
