Title | Lord of Shadows Sorcerer (Japanese) Demon Lord (Japanese) |
Race | Demon |
Voice actor | James Goode (English) Takaya Kuroda (Japanese, XI S) |
Mordegon is the central antagonist of Dragon Quest XI. A powerful demon sorcerer styling himself the Lord of Shadows, he orchestrated the destruction of the kingdoms of Dundrasil and Zwaardsrust with his army of monsters 16 years before the story begins.
Appearance and personality[edit]
In his first form, Mordegon is a tall humanoid demon with chalk-white skin. His head has two long black horns protruding from either side, with a shorter horn on his chin. His ears are pointed and pierced, wearing golden hoop earrings with dangling magenta orbs. His head is shaven save for a red spiked mohawk. He has green eyes with yellow sclera, and purple lips. His long, pointed fingernails are painted black.
Mordegon wears a long purple robe and brown pointed slippers. Bronze strips with mysterious runes adorn the edge of the robe and its sleeves. He wears a purple collar with alternating black triangles, with a long black cloth with bronze edges hanging from it. His prized weapons is a tall, gnarled wooden staff with a red crystal orb which he can magically levitate. Mordegon is also able to call forth more of his staff from a hellish dimension. These staves act individually from their master and can cast spells on their own.
Upon stealing the Sword of Light and the power of the Luminary, Mordegon's body changes into a grotesque, hulking demon with large horns, goat-like crooked legs and magenta skin with blue lips. He wears a tattered red cape and sparse armor, with golden plates covering only his left shoulder, both forearms, his pelvis and calves. He wields the Sword of Shadows at all times.
Upon defeat, the empowered Mordegon transforms into Mordragon, a skeletal serpent with a horned skull, organic eyes and tongue and two arms. His lower torso is replaced by a long spinal cord that extends until Mordragon's tail, which looks identical to the main body but with a dragon's skull and four fingers instead of five.
Mordegon is a patient, cautious schemer that only strikes when circumstances are to his utmost advantage. After his corruption by Calasmos years ago, he waited until Erdwin reawakened as the Luminary to attack Dundrasil's castle. He is still capable of changing plans on the fly, having possessed King Carnelian to kill the Luminary's father. Upon destroying Yggdrasil and stealing the Sword of Light, Mordegon shrouded the world in darkness to draw strength from people's despair and misery, and destroyed Erdwin's Lantern to prevent Calasmos from regaining his original body.
Appearances[edit]
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]
Mordegon is first alluded to by Jarvis when the dragon gloats to the party that the world will be on it's knees when the Lord of Shadows returns. Later, he's mentioned by Rab as the cause of Zwaardrust and Dundrassil's falls and as a being he's seeking to flush out of hiding. The goal of finding and stopping him becomes the focus of the group for the remainder of the first act.
When the Luminary reaches the heart of Yggdrassil, Mordegon enacts his endgame by having Jasper dispatch the heroes, then arriving behind him, still using Carnelian's body, which he uses to incapacitate Hendrik. After this, Mordegon reveals himself by shedding Carnelian's body, and then seemingly steals the Mark of the Luminary from the Hero, which he uses to open the Heart of Yggdrasil and seize the Sword of Light. He promptly corrupts the sword into the Sword of Shadows and plunges it into Yggdrasil, stealing much of the tree's power and transforming into a monstrous demon king. The tree crashes to the ground, nearly dead and entirely leafless while Mordegon proceeds to use his new power to conquer the world.
Despite his efforts, however, Veronica is able to use her magic to save her companions, scattering them across the world, though is unable to escape herself and dies in the ensuing catastrophe caused by Yggdrasil's fall.
Mordegon next appears when a crisis arises in Gallopolis; Erdwin's Lantern is descending towards the city and apparently threatens to crash into it. The Luminary, meanwhile, witnesses a black tockle who's makes its way towards an old stone circle in the desert. As it begins a ritual tied to the mystical sphere, Mordegon appears and destroys it; saving Gallopolis, and sending the black tockle into despair.
After the death of Alizarin, Mordegon becomes aware of the Luminary's survival and awaits him in the Fortress of Fear. Upon reaching him, the party sees that he has lost what little humanity remained and has become a hulking monstrosity. Mordegon is the final boss of the game's second act, and fights in two phases with a different name for each. After being pushed into a corner in his demon king form, he uses the power of the world tree to transform into a giant, skeletal, two-headed dragon named Mordragon.
After his death, the Luminary and his friends, hoping to find a way to bring back the people who died to Mordegon's rule, including Veronica, search for and discover the Tower of Lost Time. By shattering the orb within, the Luminary rewinds time and returns to shortly before his climb up Yggdrasil, but loses the Sword of Light in the process, though he gains the Sword of Shadows in its place. Using his knowledge of the future, and the Sword of Shadows' power, the Luminary is able to avoid being ambushed by Jasper and defeats him instead.
In this rewritten timeline, the Luminary claims the Super Sword of Light and Mordegon is forced to improvise further by attempting to shift the blame for all the events onto Jasper. His attempts to stealthily steal the Sword of Light are also prevented by the black tockle. Finally losing patience on the night of the victory feast, Mordegon abandons Carnelian's body and attacks the Luminary and his friends in an attempt to claim the sword, but is ultimately slain by them. With his dying words, he taunts the Luminary, understanding why he failed, and warns that he's "not the only one to defy to flow of time".
However, even without Mordegon, Erdwin's Lantern still descends towards Gallopolis. The black tockle travels to the stone circle once again and this time its ritual succeeds, at which point it's revealed to have been Calasmos, the Dark One, who escaped imprisonment in the past age. As a result of his return to power, the Luminary begins a new quest while it incubates within Erdwin's Lantern. During this adventure, it's revealed that Mordegon was once the sorcerer Morcant; brother in arms to Erdwin. Near the end of the battle with Calasmos, as Erdwin prepared to strike the final blow, Morcant fell prey to corruption from the Dark One and stabbed Erdwin in the back, then gained a portion of Calasmos' power. However a part him resisted corruption so strongly that he split in two; the good half of him gained a form of its own, independent of his original body, and began to be known as the Seer. Meanwhile, his evil half transformed into the demon Mordegon. Upon Mordegon's death, the Seer began to fade as well, but not before being able to guide the Luminary a little further on his quest to slay Calasmos.
