The Princess of Cannock is a non-player character in Dragon Quest II.  She lives at Cannock Castle and, as her name implies, is the sister of the Prince of Cannock and the daughter of the King of Cannock.  Although this also makes her a descendant of Erdrick, she does not take part in the quest to defeat Hargon.

Her default name in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is Matilda.

The Princess plays a very passive role in the game, cheering her brother on from the safety of the castle while the Luminaries save the world from the wicked occultist's plot. Her brother does not allow her to participate in the quest, likely due to being too young and having no formal martial or magical training, causing her to pout in frustration. Despite this she is very close to her older brother, being moved to tears if her cousins speak to her while the Prince is deceased.

Her brother does not allow her to participate in the quest, likely due to being too young and having no formal martial or magical training, causing her to pout in frustration. Despite this she is very close to her older brother, being moved to tears if her cousins speak to her while the Prince is deceased.

In the HD-2D Remake, the Princess is an optimistic and determined young girl. She openly displays her emotions, and is quite hot-blooded and prone to snark. Seeing it as a moral duty, she willingly disobeys her parents to rescue her brother from his curse, and although she frequently snarks to him and mentions that he causes her nothing but grief, she loves him nonetheless. The Princess has a knack for mischief, coming up with plans and schemes to trick the enemies, such as in battle where she makes up attacks or schemes on the fly, and when dealing with Mariella, where she giggles with glee when coming up with her "Divide and Conquer strategem". Having trained much before she joined, she is quite experienced, although initially, she tends to overestimate the efficacy of her abilities.

The Princess often acts with hot-blooded passion. When the mermaids are under attack, she wastes no time delivering passionate speeches. This also occurs when her and her brother use their acting skills to trick Mariella and her minions, with the both of them putting emphasis on their roles. Compounding this is her strong sense of duty, viewing it as necessary to join with the Scions of Erdrick and save her brother despite her parents' objections and the risk of death.

At the beginning of the game, the Princess thinks nothing of joining the Scions of Erdrick on their quest and once the Prince of Cannock is found, she returns to being a regular princess, though when she hears of him being cursed, she rushes to his aid and from then on, joins the party. Before she joins, she is somewhat hesitant and doesn't really think of herself as a hero, though she becomes very confident after joining. In spite of her confidence, sometimes the Princess thinks that she may be useless or secondary to her cousin and brother.

The Princess has a soft spot for non-humans, notably mermaids and faeries, as well as monsters. She frequently laments the chaotic state of the Children of Hargon and is upset at the Young Thief stealing from monsters. She believes that friendship is the key to defeating Hargon thanks to his forces being disorganized while the Scions fight as one and have the backing of many. In spite of her chaotic nature, the Princess hates it when people are disunified and arguing, notably getting quite upset at her brother and cousin arguing during the events in Burrowell, as well as lamenting the frequent arguments that the Children of Hargon have.

Scrapped ending
The Princess of Cannock was meant to play a major role in a scrapped alternate ending, which Yuji Horii revealed in an interview with Monthly LOGiN magazine in May of 1987. The Prince of Cannock would sacrifice himself to destroy Malroth, possibly using Kamikazee, and would save the world at the cost of his own life. The remaining Luminaries would return to their homes, and during the victory celebration at Midenhall castle the Princess of Cannock would enter the scene with a short sword in her hand. Mourning the loss of her brother and blaming the Prince of Midenhall for his death, her cousin would slump to the ground as the credits began to roll<ref>それは、2番目の王子(サマルトリアの王子)が犠牲となって、最後の敵を倒すというものである。

The Princess was revealed as the fourth party member during the March 27, 2025 Nintendo Direct trailer, sporting a new outfit based on her older brother's garb. Similar to Gadabouts from Dragon Quest III and Torneko from Dragon Quest IV, she will sometimes ignore the player's commands and do a random, but usually beneficial action instead. Unlike them, she is able to learn magic and has high agility in addition to her critical hit and haywire spell rate being triple that of her relatives.
Antics
The Princess' young age and inexperience will cause her to ignore direct commands from the player and perform one of seven random actions instead, with an initial one-in-six chance to do so, and the chance to cutup decreases by 0.4% with each subsequent level until she becomes fully obedient at Level 40.

The Princess of Cannock is a non-player character in Dragon Quest II. She lives at Cannock Castle and, as her name implies, is the sister of the Prince of Cannock and the daughter of the King of Cannock. Although this also makes her a descendant of Erdrick, she does not take part in the quest to defeat Hargon in versions of the game prior to the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake where she joins the other Scions of Erdrick and becomes a playable character.

Her default name in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is Matilda.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

The Princess plays a very passive role in versions of the game prior to the HD-2D Remake, cheering her brother on from the safety of the castle while the Luminaries save the world from the wicked occultist's plot.

Scrapped ending[edit]

The Princess of Cannock was meant to play a major role in a scrapped alternate ending, which Yuji Horii revealed in an interview with Monthly LOGiN magazine in May of 1987. The Prince of Cannock would sacrifice himself to destroy Malroth, possibly using Kamikazee, and would save the world at the cost of his own life. The remaining Luminaries would return to their homes, and during the victory celebration at Midenhall castle the Princess of Cannock would enter the scene with a short sword in her hand. Mourning the loss of her brother and blaming the Prince of Midenhall for his death, her cousin would slump to the ground as the credits began to roll[1].

This scenario was likely cut due to the strict memory limitations of the 1 megabit Famicom cartridge the game was programmed on, and when subsequent versions of the game were released the material was deemed unsuitable for the series and was passed over.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The Princess was revealed as the fourth party member during the March 27, 2025 Nintendo Direct trailer, sporting a new outfit based on her older brother's garb. Similar to Gadabouts from Dragon Quest III and Torneko from Dragon Quest IV, she will sometimes ignore the player's commands and do a random, but usually beneficial action instead. Unlike them, she is able to learn magic and has high agility in addition to her critical hit and haywire spell rate being triple that of her relatives.

Antics[edit]

The Princess' young age and inexperience will cause her to ignore direct commands from the player and perform one of seven random actions instead, with an initial one-in-six chance to do so, and the chance to cutup decreases by 0.4% with each subsequent level until she becomes fully obedient at Level 40.

Action Details
Lights a piece of paper on fire Deals 56~70 Fire damage to one foe
Performs an unfinished special move Normal damage to a random monster
Throws a big rock straight up in the air Normal damage to a random ally or enemy
Sings loudly Random monsters flee the battle (fearful voice) or become stunned (spooky voice)
Insults a foe A random monster is either emotionally wounded and afflicted with Sap or enraged and pumped up with Oomph
Encourages the party All Scions are sped up with Acceleratle or become too wound up and are slowed down with Deceleratle
Tap dancing Applies Dodgy Dance to herself
