The Shrine South of Rendarak is a ruined structure standing bare in a the middle of the fetid swamp that closes off the valley leading to the Passage to Rendarak. This shrine is among the most remote in the game, being accessible only through the teleportal hidden in the cathedral of Beran.

Appearances[edit]

Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit]

The shrine is a two-storey structure, with damage tiles surrounding the teleportal and swamp water surrounding the exterior. On the second storey dwells an old Mage who informs the player that the entrance to the Passage to Rendarak is to the west, and urges them to tread with caution.

There is also a gremlin on the west side of the shrine on the first storey. It promises to not attack the trio of cousins, and informs them that the water sigil can be found in the village of Moonahan; this accommodating imp is the second friendly monster in the entire series, right after the Dragonlord's great-grandson.

Android/iOS version[edit]

The smart phone versions included a fiery ghost west of the shrine, who will prevent the player from passing through unless they have obtained the False Idol and the Eye of Rubiss. Consequently the location of the soul sigil has been moved from the Passage to Rendarak to Tantegel, where the King gives it to the player upon speaking to him.

Dragon Quest II HD-2D Remake[edit]

The shrine has taken on a noticeably more sinister atmosphere, with the ground being a barren rock and miasma filling the air. It marks the final resting place of Elmoo the friendly teeny sanguini, who explored the surrounding area to help the four Scions of Erdrick find the entrance to Rendarak. Before the heroes arrive he was confronted by an infanticore that was furious over his betrayal of the Children of Hargon to befriend and aid humans, and fought the beast to the death. The little one holds more power than the demonic lion ever guessed and proves victorious, but quickly begins to succumb to his wounds just as his friends arrive; the Princess of Moonbrooke, Prince of Cannock, & Princess of Cannock simultaneously cast their healing spells but none of them are able to save Elmoo.

The sanguini faces death with his head held high, proud of himself for overcoming his assailant and being able to help his friends in their quest to save the world. His final words state how grateful he is to have met the four Scions, and they assemble a humble grave to mark his passing. The four pause before continuing their journey, with the incident making them realise why the Goddess Rubiss made them swear to Her that none of them would lose their lives in the war against Hargon. The old Mage also witnessed the tragedy from the second storey, and reveals himself to be one of the few survivors of Hargon's conquering of Rendarak decades ago.

Trivia[edit]

  • Elmoo shares much of his colour pallet with gremlins, underlining that he is based on the friendly imp from past versions of the game.
