The dreaded Pandora's box is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest VII, they are monstrous treasure chests of an imposing black color rimmed on the edges with gold and green tongues hanging out. Because they can cause instant death to the player's party (unless properly equipped), they are regarded as some of the most fearsome regular enemies in the entire series.

While absent from the original, Pandora's box makes appearances in the remakes as a monster encountered in the bonus dungeon. Given its strength and the absence of items that hamper sudden-death, it is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, especially when encountered as a group.

Pandora's box is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.

Introduced in Dragon Quest VII, they are monstrous treasure chests of an imposing black color rimmed on the edges with gold and teal tongues hanging out.

Characteristics[edit]

Pandora's box is essentially the most powerful form of the treasure chest monsters. It can use sudden-death moves that target the whole party, move more than once per round, and steal MP from its opponent when its own MP, which is rather low, gets too depleted for it to cast its spells. The monster often has the ability to deliver desperate attacks with its bites.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen[edit]

While absent from the original, Pandora's box makes appearances in the remakes as a monster encountered in the bonus dungeon. Given its strength and the absence of items that hamper sudden-death, it is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, especially when encountered as a group.

Description Countless careless kids have fallen foul of these cruel casks, which are inured against ice and wind attacks.

They love to spend their days off lolling around on the ground with their lids open, lapping up the sun and airing their insides.

Like the other chest monsters, Pandora's boxes can be encountered randomly by opening blue treasure chests in high-level Grottoes.

Dragon Quest X[edit]

Much like in the previous game, Pandora's boxes disguise themselves as blue treasure chests in high-level areas. As always, it has the ability to land Desperate attacks on characters and this time around, has the ability to cast the dreaded Kathwack.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit]

Unlike the other chest monsters, there is no limit to how many times a Pandora's box can be fought as they can be summoned repeatedly by Overweening Pride. However, they are only guaranteed to drop seeds of skill from the scripted encounters.
