Hadlar is one of the main antagonists of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.
Once known as the Dark Lord, Hadlar was defeated in the past by the hero Avan, but he was mysteriously revived stronger than before by the Dark King Vearn as the commander of his armies.
Appearance[edit]
Hadlar is a Darkling, a muscular humanoid demon male with pale green skin, long white hair with a widow's peak (pale blond in the 1991 series), and tall pointed ears. He has sharp fangs and long claws on his fingers, as well. In the past, he was shown wearing a dark cloak with a high collar and a pointed hood that made him appear practically identical to the Dragonlord.
When Hadlar returned and made his presence known to Avan and the others, he wore another dark cloak that covered his entire body with spiked shoulders, a hood giving him the appearance of having horns due to his tall ears, and a red gemstone on his forehead. In battle, he would remove his cloak to reveal his muscular physique and wore a studded metal gorget, spiked shoulderpads, black trousers and boots, and wristbands. Later in the story, Hadlar would change his outfit again to a more elaborate black cloak with red and yellow lining, as well as an intricate metallic breastplate with pointed shoulder pieces over it. The breastplate had six blue gems in a hexagonal design on the front, representing the six legions of the Dark Army.
After dying in battle with Hyunckel and being revived by Vearn's power for a second time, Hadlar gains tattoo-like black markings on his body, most visibly the left side of his face.
After being transformed into a Superior Being, Hadlar's appearance changes drastically, gaining organic armor that covers his limbs and frames the rest of his body, including taloned feet and a set of three horns similar to Vearn's. While using his ability to fly, his shoulder armour lifts from his arms and extends outwards.
Abilities[edit]
Hadlar is adept in both physical and magical combat. He has a particular affinity for Bang and Sizz spells, having the ability to cast both Kaboom and Kasizz. His notable abilities include imbuing his fire spells with clinging napalm-like properties, and sprouting spikes from his knuckles known as "Hell's Claw". As the Dark Lord he is also capable of passively exerting his will on weak monsters, compelling them to attack humans. His power increases each time he is revived by Vearn.
As a Superior Being, Hadlar gains a massive power increase along with regenerative abilities and the ability to sprout organic jet thrusters from his shoulders for high-speed flight. His Aura, bolstered by his newfound willpower, has taken on the same hellfire properties as his spells. His new form also incorporates the Sword of Champions as an orichalcum blade that extends from his arm, becoming his new primary weapon. Unlike the Superior Being prototypes, Hadlar is permanently in "battle mode", with no ability to return to his original Darkling form; this allows him to retain his full magical abilities, at the cost of a drastically reduced lifespan.
Other Appearances[edit]
