Veteran monsters (強ボス, Kyō boss) are bigger, better, but most of all badder versions of the bosses from Dragon Quest Heroes and Dragon Quest Heroes II, who bring themselves to bear for rematches against the player and party. Defeating them usually results in either a mighty weapon or the potential to create one. Challenging the bosses a second time can also reward players with rare materials, dependent on the clear time.

In Heroes, they appear on mysterious maps, while in Heroes II they can be found in dimensional dungeons. In the original game, the Grudge Match maps to challenge veteran monsters are acquired by completing Showdown matches against bosses fought in the story with gold clear time.
